School policy on pencil cases

What's the policy on pencil cases at your children's schools? Apparently, all writing materials are provided for children at DD's school at both KS1 and 2 and children aren't able to bring in their own.

I thought this was probably quite normal at KS1 but was fairly shocked that a year 6 wasn't allowed to take in their own things.

DSs go to a state school in a fairly well off area of England. School is struggling for funding like many around the UK (ironically less pupil premium kids means the school is worse off). They are asked to bring in pencil cases with the basics from Yr 3.

Luckily DS1 appears oblivious to smiggle and the like. I haven't heard anything about the latest must have, long may it last!!
