Advice needed for York primary schools!

Hi,

I was hoping someone could give me some advice regarding primary schools in York.

We will be moving next summer and probably live around the Heworth area.

By the time we move our kids will be 6 and 4. The older one will have done 2 years at a Swiss school all in French. So I would guess her English skills won’t be the same as her peers ( although she’s a native English speaker).

My question is what are the better schools to apply for? Or ones we should really avoid. I consider a nice environment, good teaching support as important rather than only focusing on progression rates ( although this is important too).

Any local advice / thoughts would be really appreciated!!

Thanks!

In Heworth, the nearest schools are Heworth C of E, Tang Hall, and Hemplands. Hemplands has a very good reputation, Heworth is a church school and prioritises admissions on that basis, and Tang Hall has a poorer reputation (it serves an area that’s known as being a bit rough, though rough in York is not that bad, really). I don’t know anyone who has children at any of the schools, but there’s a parents FB group called York Mumbler that you could join and ask for more information (I have seen similar posts on there).

Thanks a lot for your message! I’ve had a look at that group :-)

There’s Heworth CofE, Hempland, Tang Hall, St Aelred’s Catholic then a little further out is Osbaldwick. You’ll be lucky to get places at Heworth (very small intake) or Hempland (usually oversubscribed). The others, I’m not so sure about but I’d be surprised if there wasn’t space at Tang Hall.
