What does he need on his first day?

DS starts in primary 1 next Tuesday. He's kitted out with his uniform and school bag. Sorry if this sounds silly but what does he need with him. He has his bag, pencil case and water bottle. Is that all he should take? Should I put a snack in as well? He's only half days for the 1st week then full days. He'll be having lunches when he's full days so how do they work the dinner money? Do they collect it from them or do they take it with them at lunch time?

Sorry to sound so dense and ask so many questions but I haven't a clue.

Every school will be different - phone the school office - they'll be used to the questions!

I gave them a wee ring but they aren't back yet. I'll try the end of the week or Monday. Thanks.

Something for his play piece?

Lunch money probably in an envelope with his name and class on it.

Painting apron? DD did in P1 & P2

Sorry lunch money either weekly or monthly not in an envelope everyday.....

I haven't heard that in years - play piece. I now have visions of Space Raiders crisps and 10p mix-ups.

I'll stick a painting apron in his bag.

I quite clearly am a really old bird as I called it my leaf piece (although that might just have been a Fife thing) when I was at school, Space Raiders were Outer Spacers - plus you got a packet and a Viscount Mint Biscuit for 10p!!

An old shirt is as good as a painting apron and lots of DD1's classmates had one instead. What about his 'gutties' - that one is just to test you .

My mum has the gutties at the ready. It's the proper black ones with the little elastic bit on the front. None of those posh pretend gutties out of Clarks, he's got Poundies finest.

I remember them being called outer spacers as well. Don't know if you still get Chelsea Whoppers in the tuck shop though. Probably frowned upon in the healthy eating world we're in.

All dd had to take was herself and a bookbag. Pencil cases and their own stationery were not allowed in infants. Drinking water and bottles were provided by the school as was a piece of fruit at snack time. No own food allowed.

I would imagine that lunch money would be paid directly to the school office weekly or monthly. Teachers are not allowed to handle money now.
