What does your dd wear for school? Dd is 4 and can basically wear any grey/navy/black skirt/trousers, with a white or royal blue top (school colour) - polo shirt or blouse, or t-shirt, school sweatshirt, or cardigan, or grey dress, or blue/white checked dress.

I'm bamboozled. What have you gone for? I looked at skirts and got stumped by pencil/box pleat/kick pleat/ traditional pleat/ etc etc etc

What about tops - blouse or polo shirt?

And where is best place to buy from?

I had a bit of choice too - often wondered why it was called uniform! I always tried the easiest option - elastic waists, fewest buttons... I got my best school trousers ever in Marks last year for ds - he is 15, so we have tried a few!

Dd4's school allow Frey or Navy dress/skirt/trouser with White or Pale Blue Polo Top or Blouse/shirt.

Dd4 wears a white blouse with grey pleated skirt (full pleats as these seem to hang better)
She wears grey trousers in the winter.
School jumper with logo or navy school cardi.

We get blouses from Tesco, Skirts from marks and spencer or sometimes Tesco if the style is nice. Cardi's from Tesco too
Cheap and chearful but seem to last ages.

We don't do pinafore dresses as it's hard for dd4 to get them off for P.E. But she manages the buttons on her blouse easily.

Grey not Frey!

Yes elasticayed waist on skirts/trousers too.

Tried the fewer buttons option but again dd4 found the polo tops hard to get off for P.E

dd (4) is allowed:
grey skirt,trousers or pinafore
white polo shirt (with school badge or without)
red school jumper or cardy (with badge)
white socks or grey or black tights
Red checked school dress (for summer months)

I've bought a bit of all of it

(I usually left polo shirts unbuttoned under sweatshirts!) Why do they take polo shirts off for PE - that is what Irish kids wear for PE. We spent a term in England, and my kids did seem to spend a lot of time changing!

I don't like M&S polo shirts (seem to shrink to about half the size)..but i like the trousers for ds.
I prefer Tesco or Adams for polo shirts.

DD has the Jersey type school skirts, warmer and more comfortable than the pleated scratchy kind! She has gingham dresses in the summer term. She had blouses in the first couple of years then wanted polo tops. Less buttons on a polo top.

Bought in M&S, Adams, Matalan, various places at various times.

Ok I admit it, I prefer the look of a nice blouse rather than a Polo Shirt

My dd is only allowed to wear drab bottle greeen joggers. With a red poloshirt, red socks, black shoes and bottle green logo cardigan. Drab drab drab. I was looking forward to putting her in cute grey (must be grey at out school) or lovely pleated skirts. But no, starting with dd's year they have introduced joggers for reception. Sigh...

As for what you should go for - has dd expressed a preference? My dd would not wear the trousers even if she were allowed, and would struggle changing out of and back into a pinny at p.e. if it did not have a zip at the front. She is however a skirt fiend, so that's what we would have chosen.

Tops - go for polos - cheap, cheap to replace if stained, no or minimal ironing needed, easy on and off.

Cardigan / sweatshirt - purely personal choice. At our school girls can wear sweatshirts if they wanted, but most seem to wear the school's logo'd up cardigans.

I like the quality of the M&S stuff best, and it is no longer most expensive. Sainsbury's comes up small, Tesco shrinks. George at Asda seems okay (we have one hand-me-down summer dress from there and it seems to have lasted long enough to even be a hand-me-down)

we dont get a choice here but they only advice I would say is polo shirts and elastic waists for ease. Many children who can get dresses perfectly well at home sometimes struggle when they are being rushed by the teacher and other kids often get in their way!

We don't have a choice. Dd wears a grey double boxed pleat pinafore, white long sleeved blouse (can at least buy that from anywhere), tie on elastic, red v neck jumper with school name embroidered on, grey knee length socks or tights and black shoes.

DD1 has just finished reception.

Almost all the girls wear skirts in reception, although I have one pair of trousers for really cold days (we walk 25 mins to school).

For skirts, go for something she's be able to run around in - probably pleated rather than straight. DD1's best friend started school in a really tight, straight skirt and she looked all uncomfortable when they were haring around being noisy kids in the playground.

Polo shirts in preference to blouses in Reception, for similar reasons. They just seem more comfortable for playing in, to me, and they do still do lots of playing in that first year!

Don't worry about dresses till easter - especially if you go for polo shirts. She won't be too hot in a polo and skirt, even if September is warm. And if you buy a dress now, you may only get a couple of weeks' use out of it. DD1 went up a whole dress size in her first six months at school - something they put in the dinners, I reckon.

Try asking the teacher or school secretary if they are contactable. i would have bought blouses and shirts but the secretary said all teh children wear polo shirts so i got those so the dc's would be the same as everyone else.
Bottoms were easy, dd chose trousers so have just got two sets the same for dd and ds with a couple of pairs of shorts in case early Sept is hot!

We have skirts and pinafores. Pinafores look smarter and sweeter on little girls IMO. However they are trickier to deal with for PE.

Skirts - all you can do is try on for style. For eg some styles are very short which I'm not keen on. But I think simple styles look nicest. It's just personal choice.

You do need to try on anyway - DD tried one M&S stretch skirt style in sizes from 7 down to 4 (she is a skinny 6) and all were way too wide at the waist.

Stretchy for pinafore is a good option tho.

Girls at our school usually wear cardigain not jumper. Can you check what's the norm at yrs?

I usually go to M&S as find it good fit and good quality. They have lovely fairtrade cotton polos this year (with zips! fabbbbbb) and trousers with adjustable waists (tho that's for boys).

summer dress for girls - well worth considering for start of autumn term (DD wil still be in hers) but hard to find now. Can you get a couple of hand ons? (I have plenty, but all in red....) Asda is good value for dresses btw - get em in April before they sell out.

my dd will be starting receptionsoon. it will be grey trousers, or dress with white shirt for winter, and red check dress for summer. i'm not sure whether to bother letting her have a summer dress as by the time she can wear it again in april, it will probly be small on her.
