Private Tutor with the school's class teacher at the school

Dear Mums, I would live to know your opinion regarding private tutoring at the school (catholic) . My child is been doing bad at Reading since reception and I spoke with the teachers asking for techniques and how to help her and they always replied /Not to worry/ Read at home. She started YEAR 1 and got book's level from Reception. I went worry again spoke with the teacher and said notjing different except - well, this year she will have a test. But nothing else. Later on the week, I discovered that the same teacher is been approached by a parent to pay her as a private teacher after school in the school to help her kid. Do you think this is good? Do you think this is promoting a beneficial treatment ? I would like to listen to your opinions. Thanks !!!

Your child is still very young. If the school are saying not to worry then I'd suggest not worrying! Are you reading with her at home? Guessing that English is not your first language, is there someone else who could read with her at home?

I don't think a tutor at this stage will do anything that you can't easily do yourself.
And - don't worry about the test - which is to test her understanding of phonics. It's to measure the school, not your child, and hopefully your child won't even be aware it is happening!

At our school we wouldn't privately tutor any student due to conflict of interest and blurred boundaries.

Try not to worry, the teachers don't sound too concerned.

I wouldn't use a tutor from the school as half the point of a tutor (for my kids anyway) is that it's a fresh perspective, maybe offering a different learning style eg ds was really struggling with English & science but getting a tutor who he gelled with, not connected with school has worked well for him.

Is English your first language at home? Sorry to ask but I wondered if it might be a contributory factor. Does the school have a lead for English? Perhaps they might make some suggestions.

We are a mix-family, my husband is English and I am Spanish. So she has both languages at home:-) I read with her everyday and my thoughts are that blending is difficult for her although her phonics are good. However the school is not worrying and suggesting private tutoring at this stage I though a bit odd and I shared your opinions.

Today, I complained as the school is not giving Reading Records so I am not having any reading records since the 1st day of School. Is that normal?

She's really young. DD3 wouldn't really even pick up a book at that age. She's perfectly intelligent, she just didn't like to risk getting it wrong, so would rather not do it. Now, age 10, she's reading ahead of expectations and you'd never know.

Bilingual kids often take a little while to catch up with their monolingual friends - if the teachers aren't concerned I wouldn't be and I certainly wouldn't get any tutoring. Just keep reading at home and it will all settle - she's very little.

Maybe ask the teacher what the process is for the reading record for Y1 - it should be coming home regularly I'd have thought?

I do private tutoring but am absolutely not allowed to tutor any of my own students for the reasons above. I'd be very surprised if it was allowed tbh.

I agree that if phonics are fine, that's plenty at this stage. If I remember rightly, the phonics test is May or June, so you have practically the whole academic year ahead of you anyway.

If you want a reading record, you can always create one at home.

thanks, i feel much better now. she will have as an exception reading records but this year the kids are no longing receiving reading records to bring back home. they read only with a parent who is not native speaker -- only once a week. The teacher said not to worry as you will have private tutoring ? I am reading with her everyday 1 book and make sure she enjoys reading.

Lots of kids in Y1 haven't got to grips with reading - while other are already free reading. It usually levels out over the next two years. I really wouldn't worry - just keep reading!

The teacher should absolutely NOT be privately tutoring a child in their class for money.
You say she "has been approached." Do you mean just that someone has asked her, or has she accepted?

@Callme Angelina, the teacher approached me to ask me if i will be interested at private tutoring with her and she told me as well that another kid from the class will be receiving classes. So i become really annoyed about the whole thing

That’s really unprofessional and concerning.

Did the teacher mean private tutoring (which would be sessions outside of school, and outside the jurisdiction of school) or did she mean they are offering a support session at school for DC who need additional help?

As PP said, it would be very unprofessional to offer the first, but the second is absolutely normal!

She said 'private tutoring' after school in the school class .

i keep reading every day and noted a bit of improvement but slow. she will get there. Thanks for your replies.
