My ds just started year 2 and already is feeling worried about the work.He didn’t mind Year 1 and really didn’t find it much different to reception but it seems that it’s very intense already in his new classroom.

It’s early days but should I see how this goes and have a chat with the teacher to see if there’s some additional work we can do at home?

Personally I would give it a few weeks to see how he settles before trying to talk to the teacher, so early in the year you have no idea how he is actually doing and neither will the teacher for another couple of weeks. S/he is still getting to know the class.

DD1 found the jump up from Y1 to Y2 quite hard going last year as I recall - academically she's very bright and she came out of the year working at greater depth across the board and absolutely adoring her teacher (who was fantastic) so it was just an adjustment wobble really and I just waited it out. Lasted a couple of weeks as I recall and there were a couple of times where she got into a tangle worrying about what she'd covered in maths which I just went back over with her at home and then she was fine.
