Charities wanting 2nd hand uniform (for free)

Hi,

I run the 2nd hand uniform operations at DS2's school. We currently have a glut of generic grey trousers in ages 4-13 and a large number of white shirts.

I have a friend who does a similar job at a girl's school that runs from 4-18 who would also like an outlet for their surplus stock (which is quite significant as the uniform there has recently changed).

We don't want to sell the stock. We want to give it directly to a children's charity or local authority. Our goal is to see these outgrown quality goods recycled. Can anyone please offer any advice as to who might want them? We are London based but would be happy for the goods to go anywhere, nationally or internationally.

Some foodbanks have clothes banks - contact Trussell Trust

Some Salvation Armies operate free school clothing banks for parents that can't afford uniforms. The one in Ilford (East London) does

Thanks folks. I've now found a home for it all at a school in Nigeria!

Another avenue to look at is to ask the teachers. Schools often keep a supply of spare items in case of accidents, and I've lost count of the number of times I've bought clothing for a student who has none or has very obviously outgrown what they are wearing.

In Nottingham there is a brilliant charity called Sharewear that is like a foodbank but for clothing. sharewearclothingscheme.org/

Ours always goes to Ghana to a twined school there-and we get sent photos and letters from the children,

Does anyone know of a charity in London which takes school uniform donations (eg white shirts, grey shorts)?

Wood Street mission in Manchester take school uniform.

I was going to suggest a charity that redistributes in Africa. The children at DCs school are fascinated that the children at their twined school wear the same school uniform as them!

I know you are sorted OP, but for others asking, there are quite a lot of these 'Free Uniform' groups starting up locally, but just individuals or groups of friends organising it together rather than a national charity we can direct you to, so it is probably worth asking in whatever way your local community talks to each other -- so here is it the local community Facebook Group
