Hello ! I'm relocating to England from Hong Kong. I'm considering to live in Bishop's Stortford but I have no idea on the cost of living there. My DH works from home and probably needs to commute to London every fortnight. I need to drive to and from Harlow everyday as I maybe able to get a job there. Can anyone give me a rough idea on how much is the monthly expenditure of a typical 4 person family ( 3 year and 8 year old children ) inclusive of everything ( entertainment, bills etc ) EXCEPT housing ( as I can find the info from rightmove )?What is the fuel cost ?
Thank you very much.

It really really depends on your lifestyle. Generally, wherever in England you live, the differences won't be massive.

If you're in a 3-bed terrace, for example, I'd expect the bills to be maybe £300,
weekly shop (groceries and cleaning products) £100-150,
family meal at a budget restaurant/special offer - £70-80,
extra-curricular activities for children - £200(?) lots more if you do private tuition/music/horse riding etc
Clothes - you can get stuff for £3-10 from Primark etc of spend loads so that's very variable.
Babysitting if you want to go out - possibly £10/h unless using a teen
Cleaner - maybe £12/h but it varies a bit too

Hi. I live in Bishop's Stortford in Hertfordshire, have done all of my life. It's really lovely here. :-) Becoming very popular for people looking to move just outside of London. Excellent schools, good transport links and lots of 'family' things to do. I travel to Harlow for work 3 (soon to be 4 days) a week. Fuel cost is low, probably just under £5 a day return i would say. Depending on time of day the journey can take anything from 20 mins-45 mins. There is a fantastic Facebook group called 'Bishop's Stortford Mummies Village' where there is a community of 5,000 + local mums who will help answer any questions you may have. Good luck with the move! X
