Plimsolls?

So DD1 starts in reception soon, the uniform list says black plimsolls for PE. Do kids really wear plimsolls or do they use that word to mean trainers?

They all wear plimsolls at our school and at every other school I've seen (I was a supply teacher).

Etiquetteworry · 11/08/2019 15:51

Thank you, do they wear them for long? Would a cheap pair do or should I get some fitted at a shoe shop?

We got these for DD and they’re lovely:

At my DD’s Primary they wear these to do indoor PE.
They were a bloody nightmare for DD because she had short but wide feet and as they weren’t allowed to wear socks they gave her blisters.
DS has a very high arch and struggles to get slip on shoes on so it was a problem for him too until I found some with a Velcro strap.

Yaflamingalah · 11/08/2019 16:01

Agree with getting the velcro strap. They sell them almost everywhere now. I think I got DDs’ in Tesco

Unfortunately she's got tiny feet, a 6E and these all seem to start at a 7 or 8. Anyone found little ones?

You might have to put insoles in as well OP. DS has very narrow feet. Plimsolls weren't great for him, but he definitely had them in the early years of Primary School.

ParkheadParadise · 11/08/2019 17:53

Also need them for Dd at nursery
Got them in Sainsburys, have also seen them in Matalan

reefedsail · 11/08/2019 19:27

Yep, 'daps' are indeed a thing!

dementedpixie · 11/08/2019 19:28

Clarks also sell them

happytoday73 · 11/08/2019 19:33

My boys have wide feet... I find that the M&S velcro ones are the only ones that fit. Clarks are most expensive and much to our suprise weren't wide enough... Supermarkets also sell this time of year... But not when urgently need replacement for lost one mid year!

Etiquetteworry · 11/08/2019 20:15

Thanks everyone, I'll have to try a big Sainsbury's.

Clarks were the only place we could get a size 6 most of the supermarkets started at a 8. Tbf they lasted the whole school year though and the Velcro fastening meant they actually stayed on her feet as slip ons usually fall off if she runs. Curse of tiny feet!

A different question, but I saw a thread about plimsolls and wondered - they all seem to be black, so how do you label/mark them so your kids can find their pair easily? I mean obviously you can label the inside but can you put stickers or anything on the outside?

happytoday73 · 11/08/2019 20:44

You can buy a white marker pen if black inside... Or typex

Canyousewcushions · 11/08/2019 20:51

We got them in a size 6 from a local indepedent shoe shop- worth seeing if you have somewhere near you if no joy in the supermarkets.

RomaineCalm · 11/08/2019 20:54

so how do you label/mark them so your kids can find their pair easily?

When DC were in reception I used to get a Sharpie and draw half a smiley face inside each one so that when they were put together the right way round they made a complete smiley face.

Helped DC to identify their own shoes and also get them on the right feet.

ineedaholidaynow · 12/08/2019 00:55

You can get special shoe labels that you stick inside the shoe that have a bit you write their name on and then a bigger clear plastic bit that goes over it to help stick it to the shoe, if that makes sense.

8by8 · 12/08/2019 09:06

I love the smiley face idea! Thanks.

PantsyMcPantsface · 12/08/2019 15:54

Check if they're actually going to need them straight away though - in my kids' school they do indoor PE in their bare feet and only really need plimsolls in the summer months for outside - by which time their feet have bloody grown anyway!
