Uniform dilemma

Hi there, our school has changed to Schoolblazer as its supplier which I don't like as I prefer to be able to try stuff on in shops. A sports top has arrived for DS. It's quite expensive so we want growing room. We sized up one and it's actually fine chest wise (if we size down, it might be a snug fit or won't last very long) but the length is ridiculous! It almost down to this knees! It's made out of polyester. DH has suggested that we take up the hem so that the length isn't so crazy long. However, if we sew it he thinks it will ruin the top because of the material and/or when we let down the hem there might be a fold mark where it's been washed repeatedly. Ummmm.

What have others done where uniform hasn't fit very well? We could size down but there's no guarantee that it the length will be much shorter and the top isn't cheap.

Thanks.

Cut some material off at the bottom and resew the hem so that there's room for growth but it's not crazily long

I’ve taken ours up (folded over). no problem (we’ve now let it down again, 2 years later...)

By "we" hem, I assume he means him.

If DS is under about 10 I might turn the hem up. With older ones I would tend to just let it be long, unless he is a noticeably different shape to his friends, because they will all be in the same boat. DS's sports team tops are the same, and they just wear them long or snug.
