SATs and Level Child Working At

We are looking at moving our daughter to a new school for Y3. We are not convinced her current one is that great.

Over the last year I have picked up she didn't know a lot of basic maths such as simple addition of single numbers etc. Discussed with teacher at parents evening, and she agreed she was below expected and struggles. Gave us areas to work on at home.

She got 96 on SATs for KS1 maths, but Expected in her end of year report. I cant see how all of the above adds up to Expected and not below?

Ks1 sats infirm teacher assessment; it’s quite unusual for parents to receive a scaled score actually. Perhaps the teacher thinks overall she is at the expected standard but had a bad day the day she did the test and got below 100. That said, if she agreed your daughter was struggling (and from what you’ve written it sounds like she’s quite behind) it seems odd she’s been given expected. Why don’t you ask?

Agree with Modge that the teacher should be able to explain it.

The SATS scaled score only tells you that she didn't quite score enough across the two maths papers to reach 'expected' level (100), but the teacher will have sufficient evidence from other work and tests carried out during the year to mark her as reaching the 'expected' level.

How long ago was the last parents evening? If you have been working with your DD at home, perhaps she has made sufficient progress?

The teacher will no doubt have had to justify to the school management team the uplift from the SATS score, so she should be able to explain it to you as well.

Or maybe the management team did the uplift to make the reported figures look better, so the school looks better in the league table.

I would certainly query the evidence if you don't agree that the child is working at the expected level - and unable to do single figure addition is worrying.

I don’t think it would be league tables. I don’t think they’re reported in the league tables. If anything it’ll end up worse for them in 4 years when they ks2 progress figure is calculated in 4 years. Most likely for ofsted or the school website.

The fact that the OP has noticed an issue, the teacher agreed and that seems to have been backed up by the test paper does need some explaining though.
