please could any reception class teachers help me make a little more sense of dd1's report?

she has a list of 'statements', which range from 'level'7-9. the higher ones are in the emotional/ creative areas, which i'm pleased about.

is a child who gets 7s in literacy about average? ( i've had some concerns about her reading)

tia.

I think 7 is the average from what I remember from DS's open evening - why don't you have a quick word with the teacher tomorrow? x

noonar · 18/07/2007 21:27

thanks, chip. i may well ask her tomorrow.

I think getting a 9 means that they are working within yr 1 or above for that activity. which is great . All reception children are aiming to achieve 8's by the end of reception but obviously thats easier for some than others espcially with the age spread in a reception class.

noonar · 18/07/2007 21:33

but if 9 is exceptional, then surely 8 is above average?

I think - from googling the other evening - that the government website comments on the foundation stage profile and lists some statistics for how many children are achieving the various levels. Although I personally take these with a huge dose of salt - some teachers will probably view childrens progress differently from others at this early stage. I would tentatively comment that getting a 9 in the literacy (especially writing sentencecs with expression and meaning etc) and numeracy areas is fairly difficult. The stats showed that around 10 - 20% of reception children were gaining 9's. However it doesn't show how many chilren got 9's in lots of areas etc - ie maybe some of those children got 1 or 2 9's in a specific area they were particularly good at - eg socially expressive etc.

I would say that if a child has achived 8's across the board then that is above average. But maybe a musnet reception teacher can help out more..

emotional development is a great area to get a 9 in - takes you a long way in life if you can express yourself in a really good way and understand others

whiskersonkittens · 19/07/2007 13:38

Generally I think the average across the country is 6 - 7 so your dd is doing very well
