My DD 6 is just finishing in Year 1. Her teacher called me in to "have a word" and has said that generally her work is up to the expected standard of someone her age. However in her recent sats her written test was completely muddled up! She got some letters, especially P's the wrong way round, and spelt some words which she can normally spell all muddled up. The teacher repeated the test again a couple of days later, as she said she knows my DD can do much better, and again the same result.
I am quiet concerned over this, although the teacher has said not to worry, but practice over the hols.
Just wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar, and how they dealt with the situation, or am I just stressing way too much.

Thanks.

has she always had them the wrong way around?
If not could she have been stressed out about it?

No she does'nt always get them wrong, and generally the work in her book is ok.
I would'nt have thought she was stressed out as I don't think she even realised she was being tested!!

My 5yo in yr1 does this a lot, and she writes very well, apart from this. My 7yo often does it still. I get the impression it's very normal.

they don't do SATS in yr 1 do they?

I wouldn't worry too much. It will probably sort itself out in time. At 6 they can sometimes still be doing this. 'P's, 'b's, 'd's, 'q's are notorious for being written the wrong way round although they are by no means the only letters that children get the wrong way round.

DD3 in yr2 writes d's and b's the wrong way all the time. She reads them wrong as well.

Sorry Fennel not honestly sure if sats or just assesment tests.

I thought it was normal myself to be honest to get some letters the wrong way around, however my DD's teacher has said we should be correcting her now, and it should'nt really be happening now at her age!!!

Thanks for all your advise though. I'm not going to make too big an issue out of it. i don't want her to get stressed out at 6 !!!
