Hi, can anyone tell me what happens re waiting lists? If you go down the list do they tell you? Or if you get to the top and a place becomes free do they contact you?

We don't ring round the list telling people they've moved down- we simply don't have time! (V popular school, massive waiting lists for every year)
As soon as there's a space, we go to the list, verify top position, and ring them. They can assent over the phone, then confirm in writing.

Ok thanks

Haskell if by placing our child on a waiting list for a school does that mean we automatically lose the place we've been offered if that waiting list becomes available?
We added another choice school for waiting list but I don't like all this uncertainty so now I'm thinking of just going with the offered school

This will depend on your local authority's policy - in most areas, you are given time to consider whether or not to accept, but in others, if a place becomes available at one of your higher preference schools, you are deemed to have accepted it and your current place is cancelled.

In our local authority, the policy docs all say you automatically lose the place, but in practice they still contact you and give you a few days to think about it.

In our authority you remain on the waiting lists of the schools you placed at a higher preference to your offer. If a higher preference school place becomes available and you are the top of the waiting list, you will be offered it, but it doesn't cancel your existing offer.

The best thing you can do is ensure you accept your current offer, as you will have a school place while you decide what to do if another offer comes in.

Thank you. I've spoken to them and they've assured me they won't take away existing offer without speaking to me first.
