daps is one of the most vile words in the English language. I'd never heard it until we moved to the south-west and my mother in law offered to make my eldest a 'dap bag' for when she started school. I would call them plimsolls or gym shoes or P.E. shoes. We also had sandshoes when I was at school, they were always white with laces.

Even now I can't bring myself to say daps, it's a concession for me to write it! I just hate the word. My children laugh at me when we go to buy new ones because I go out of my way to avoid saying it if I actually have to ask for them. Must be one of those north-south divides.
