Educational Magazine Subscription for 6 year old.

My dad wants to get a magazine subscription for my very-nearly-6 year old DS. He's seen an ad for Aquila but I think that's aimed at older children. Does anyone have any recommendations? DS says his favourite subject is science, he also love Horrible Histories and is into Romans, Knights, etc.

We get Aquila and my DSs are 5&7 and love it. Some of it goes over the 5 yr old's head but it has introduced him to new topics and the 7 year old loves every bit of it.

Whizz Pop Bang would suit perfectly! Science focus, with hands on stuff as well as articles, jokes & puzzles.

We get Aquila, The Week Junior and The Week Junior Science and Nature.

Dd(7) likes the science and nature one best, but also The Week She’s not got into Aquila, though my older dd (10) loves it and has read it avidly from about 6yo.

Depends on how much he reads. Mine would not have been interested in Aquila or week junior at that age.
But they loved the okido magazine that is aimed at a younger audience.

He's only on blue reading band at school and not reading independently at home yet. I personally wouldn't get a magazine subscription for him just yet, but my dad really wants to get one for him and it'll please him to do so. So I'm seeing it as something we'll be reading together for now anyway. I can't wait for him to be reading independently...pre-children, my mental image of parenthood was sitting cuddled up on the sofa with me and my child reading our own books quietly together. I think I misjudged that one ever so slightly. 😆

If he isn't really reading yet, can your dad get subscription for online subscription for something educational and fun, rather than a magazine?
Something like poptropica or prodigy-maths or something else?

We get The Week Junior and my boys (8+12) love it but I think it would be way above a 6yr old's head. I would wait a year or two. We tried Aquila but neither of them had much enthusiasm, it's a bit worthy.

Another option for kits rather than magazines is Curiosity Box. They offer various options for hands-on science kits delivered. The folks who run it are lovely too!

Does he like puzzles? My DC both love Quiz kids which is more puzzles and less reading. Is your dad set on a magazine or would be be up for one of those subscription boxes? The curiosity box is great!

Not educational but fab. My 7 year old has started getting The Phoenix recently. We both love it!

NG Kids is great for early readers - mostly very short caption-type bits of information and one or two longer articles that you could read together.
When he’s a little older we found The Week Junior excellent

The Phoenix looks fun. Will bear that in mind for when he's reading independently, thanks Muddlingalongalone.

FullOfJellyBeans, he's not really into puzzles, no. He'd enjoy a subscription box, but I think part of my Dad wanting a magazine for him is so he can take it round there and read with my Dad. My Dad has various disabilities so my DS only sees him at his house, sat in his chair...reading a magazine is something they could do together.

I've ruled out Aquila for now. Looks too old for him at the moment.
Okido a bit young for him now. NG Kids might be a good option for him. Or WhizzPopBang. Leaning slightly towards NGKids for the breadth.

There's a series of monthly magazines made by Bayard which my DD has enjoyed:

StoryBox - age 3-6
AdventureBox - age 6-9
DiscoveryBox - age 9-12

If he's not yet an independent reader, I'd recommend StoryBox to start with.

Sent a few links to my Dad with the suggestions on. He's gone with WhizzPopBang. I think mainly because he could month by month subscription rather than a whole year, so can cancel if my DS doesn't like it. I'm sure we'll try others at some point too.
