ladybird do some good reading books graded at 4 levels which we used for ds when he was the same age - they come in 6 packs and are traditional stories. we used the banana books too, they were good. oup do read at home series although kipper asnd chip but not magic key. if he's really ahead horrid henry is excellent HTH

naswm · 06/07/2007 23:11

oh that is helepful, thanks. I never thought of ladybird. Peter and Janme and all that! Great. Will gogogle. what age is horrid hengy? (doen read and home books)

Have you checked out your library? During the summer holidays our librarys do a reading challenge, whereby the kids have to read a certain amount of books for stickers and a medal at the end.

naswm · 06/07/2007 23:17

ahsamed to say have never joined libruary. I codl list whole armful of reasons why, but that owuld be pedabtuic. I am intending to join on Monday (wonder what document sI need to take?) but have osme book tokens I wat to use to buy some too. DS2 is younger so they will get re used

naswm, when my ds was your age he suddenly "got" reading too. Hw really enjoyed the Usborne Young Reader series: here's an example.

clutteredup · 06/07/2007 23:18

the ladybird readers are a bit more 'story' than peter and jane which are still trying to include key words - by all means give them a go but i felt ds would find them a little trite, as he loves stories, its what motivated them to read. Not sure exact aga of HorridH but we read them to ds last year and he's reading them on his own now -6 in may so just finishing yr1. captain underpants is also probably slightly easier than horridhenry and very popular with my ds - others too by the same author - try amazon for searching its more limited than google so easier to find what you want.

Take proof of address and identity to join the library. You will find the staff very helpful

good one from marina too. need proof of address normally 2 to join library - drivng license and utility bill will do. libraries are great as they can have up to 10 or more books and you don't have to pay for overdue books. you can also get story tapes and cds for car journeys. much cheaper if they are flying trough books. but if you have another child reading schremes can be good value and i haven't seen them in our library but generally you can order what you want.

naswm · 06/07/2007 23:24

thansk youa re all being v helpful

I just dont want him to lose the momemntuim he has built up at wshcol of the next 3 months. He has read me the books i sued to read him as a toddler - grafflo and duck in truck and the like - but want more age approtppate books nbow.

Interestingly we were against horrid henry for the same reasons but actually ds doesn't entirely identify with horrid henry because hh doesn't like books and he does so he accepts that there are some differences, also we discussed the behaviour of hh with hh and why what he does is 'naughty'. funnily enough its quite moral in a weird way.

naswm · 06/07/2007 23:46

Why not let him choose? A good library will have plenty of books to choose from.

Kaz33 · 07/07/2007 21:33

Have a look at www.thebookpeople.co.uk - they normally have collections of reading books at knock down prices.

I must admit that we buy oodles of books from there because I love books

naswm · 08/07/2007 10:02

I have just discovered this thread in the threads I am on. Sorry.

I can hardly work out what on earth I was saying, so thank you to all those who attempted to decyper my drunken ramblings and actually help me.

But we did join the library yesterday. I am very ashamed to say that after nearly 5 years of parenthood I had not done it before. But I hadnt. Anyway, an hour later, and 20 books, 2 CDs and one DVD later, we left. DS1 chose loads of different books. They had a great section whcih seemed just about his level, so I let him just pcik what he wanted. (I also got 2 packs of the Oxford Reading Tree series). So we are well and truely set up for the mammoth summer holiday.

Thank you again

naswm, I haven't posted on your other recent thread because I feel I cannot possibly say anything that will be of any help . You have such a lot to contend with and it seems to me you have had for a while.
So joining the library is a great step forward and I'm glad you found loads of stuff there for ds1 You sound like a mum in a million

naswm · 08/07/2007 21:54

marina - thank ytou for sahying that. I am definitely not a mum in a million....

We live fairly close to each other I think....
