my ds(5) is due to go into year 2 in september. we've just had a letter telling us that due to variations in numbers between the years, years 1 and 2 will be together. does it sound weird?

DS1 is in a Y3/4 mix- and DS2 in a Y1/2 mix! This is a town infant/junior combo but in a relatively well to do area thus with a falling roll. DS1 I'm happy about BUT that's only because on Friday we discovered due to a lot of incomers from another local junior school that's having some problems, the'll be able to have 4 classes of 25 apiece not 3 of 32 apiece. Yr 3 has worked quite well. They set the kids quite rigorously which is the key.

DS2's situation isn't so good. There'll be 28 kids in his class who'll be all of his existing class, bar 6 who've been put into the OTHER yr 1 class to become Yr 2, THEN they're hauling 10 reception kids up to join DS2's class making a Y1/2 and the rest of the reception will become Yr 1. Confused? Us too. There doesn't seem to have been any ability or age banding AND we get 2 part time teachers. LOTS of unhappy parents but an immoveable head teacher!

My boys have had a variety. Ds2 is in a yr1/2 class at the moment - he is a yr2. It has been fine. Next year the whole class will move on so will be yr2/3. Again I'm sure it'll be fine. Ds1 also had yr1/2 mix - he was a younger one in the year and this actually did his confidence the power of good. This is a village first school (up to end of yr3) - only has 3 classrooms and traditionally has had a yr2/3 class due to smaller yr3 class size - loads left at end of yr2 for prep schools, but not happening so much lately.

miljee - we had a similar situation. When ds2 went into yr1 he was one of the younger ones. Older half of yr1 went with yr2s and younger stayed with recpetion - didn't work as too much time was taken up with reception childre. Ds2 frequently complained of being bored.
