Year 1 reports decoding. What do the number letter combos mean?

I appreciate each school does things differently but I was wondering if the numbering system 1A-1H means anything to anybody?

this is what my DD primary school used to grade, but in your case it cod be different and the number one could just mean year 1.

Attainment

A = Very Good
B = Good
C = Satisfactory
D = Weak
E = Very Weak

Effort

1 = Very Good
2 = Good
3 = Satisfactory
4 = Poor
5 = Very Poor

They’re the trading content domains. Nothing to do with effort or attainment at all.
From memory:
1a - vocabulary / definition
1b - retrieval
1c - sequence
1d - inference
1e - predict

reading content domains

Since the new curriculum, school can make up their own assessment, I believe. It's different every year at my ds's school, but comes with detailed explanations what it means. Best place to ask is your school/teacher.

It used to be 1a/b/c, 2a/b/c etc in the old curriculum, but it's long gone, so nothing is shared nationally.

Reading is split up into different skills.
1a is the skill of being able to define words
1b is the skill of being able to retrieve - answer straightforward questions about what has been read
1c is being able to retell stories in the correct sequence
1d is being able to infer
1e is being able to predict
(f,g,h are not KS1 skills which is why this part is blank on your child's report)
These are national and related to the Curriculum 2014.

Sorry norestformsz I don't think that's correct.
The reading domains are what is tested in the KS1 / KS2 reading tests. Therefore surely they are national?

Of course schools may use whichever grid they like.

Myother they're only tested at the end of Y2 and they don't use those grids

They are tested on the content domains.

Only at the end of Y2 and the OP's child is in Y1

I would imagine they mean your dc is doing very well indeed. This is based on the fact that I have never heard anyone either on here or in real life ask for an interpretation of a school report which didn’t!

The school are clearly tracking the children's progress against the content domains in KS1.

Madmarchpear I'm afraid only your school can tell you about the system they use as there is no national system for Y1,3,4 or 5 only for the end of each Key Stage.

Ask the school. We are a homeschooling family so I'm sorry I can’t be of much help here.
I recommend contacting the school by email. Most teachers are always happy to answer questions and discuss any part of the report that is confusing to parents.

Thank you all. The above explanation about key areas makes sense. Dd is middle of the pack so was not a stealth boast or claim she is genius. A / means part way and not yet achieved.
