Does anyone know if class sizes can be bigger once children reach Year 3? Trying to get DD into a school class that is currently full but want to know if things might be easier next year.

there isn't a limit on class sizes from year 3. My child has been in a class of 38 (39 in the afternoons) but the published admission number still applies.

Many schools try and stick to the published admissions number. They have to take certain categories of children but uniess the admission number increases in y3, there is no guarantee a school will take above the admission number. They do not have to. It is worth asking what the school normally does but many hold the line, so to speak, and appeals are not successful.,

Thank you. So do you know if there is a limit in KS1 and if so, what that is?

The limit in KS1 is based around the infant class size regulations, which say no more than 30 pupils with one school teacher. No school can finance two teachers for 30ish pupils, hence the effective limit of 30 per class other than in some set situations. In KS2 there is no limit other than what is deemed sensible for the size of the classroom. Give the limit in KS1 most schools like to try and keep to 30 in KS2.

From reading on here, appeals from year 3 onwards are easier to win, as it’s about showing that the impact on your child not getting the place is worse than the impact on the school of taking an extra child. Whereas Infant Class Size appeals are only won if an error was made the directly cost your child a place

Thanks all. Good insights CloserIAm2Fine
