Teacher pronouncing DS's name wrong

DS2 is called Jett ( J as in jug -ett ) his teacher however seems to be pronouncing it Jhett/Shett which I think is maybe the french way of saying it but to me it just sounds like she's calling him Shit.

She has a slight welsh accent but I'm not sure if this is just how it sounds when she tries to say it or if she actually thinks that's how its pronounced.
He's Y1 and so far none of his class seems to have picked up on it, he hasn't either but I'm worried it they might and it will turn into teasing/bullying.

Would you go in and say it sounds like your calling him 'Shit' could you try and say the J or just leave it?
DH who does the school run thinks that as its obvious she isnt calling him that, she's not saying it wrong on purpose and ds doesnt care we should just leave it. We had trouble last year with DS1's teacher in the same school who was refusing to call him by his actual name and ended up having to go in and complain multiple times so already look like the parents who like complaining.

I would say it's just her accent.

Took me a minute to work out that his name is not actually pronounced jug-ette

I would try pointedly saying his name a few times in conversation under some pretext for speaking to her, just to make sure she's clear on how to say it. I can vaguely imagine a valleys accent making it sound slightly French (like J as in je m'appelle) but I can't imagine it would be confused with shit.

I fail to see how Jhett and Shit sound the same, Welsh accent or no.

I don't think she has a speech impediment, obviously I don't know but havent noticed any problems with her speech when talking to her.
Shett said quickly at least how she is saying it does sound like shit, obviously I wouldnt have made this thread if it doesnt sound like she's saying shit.

maybe with a french accent it might sound ever so slightly like shet.
some consonants are harder in other languages.

It's actually incredibly rude and disrespectful to mispronounce people's names.

However, asking people to have the courtesy of pronouncing them correctly can be really, really difficult for some people. And I can see that if you've already had issues and don't want to be 'that parent', you'd be reticent to go in again.

I probably wouldn't go in specifically, but maybe try to correct her the next time you hear her say it, with a friendly, 'it's Jett with a hard J'...?

Even if it’s due to accent? I really struggle to pronounce ‘Rhys’ the proper welsh way. Just can’t do it. I’m not being disrespectful or rude, I just can’t say it.

I think it's her accent - I think some welsh people do pronounce Js very softly.

No one pronounce my name(foreign) correctly, not even my dh, I don't think it's rude. The pronunciation of my name doesn't exist in English sounds.

I don't think it does matter as long as your Ds can recognise the teacher is calling his name, and doesn't think he was called as you say she sounds. If it does, he can correct her that his name is "Jett", not "Shett". But I wouldn't personally speak to teacher myself.

He’ll have to learn to cope with being called airplane by his friends, I suspect so a Welsh teacher slightly mispronunciation his name isn’t really an issue, surely?

Putting on a (bad) welsh accent and I think it is just her accent so I would leave it. But I am laid back my name is frequently mispronounce and I don’t care and my DDs name is mispronounced by some teachers at her school but there are two girls with her name with ever so slightly different pronunciations so they have my sympathy.

Ok, google tells me that it is Australian, so surely a drawly 'jh' as in JHETT would be the correct pronunciation?

I could probably spend 10 minutes listening in person to OP explain the pronunciation difference & I'd still not be able to hear it. I think I have audio dyslexia.

maybe switch to child's middle name, OP. Since this is a recurring problem for u guys.

If the teacher is pronouncing it wrong just say to her 'I've noticed you are pronouncing DS' name wrong, its actually pronounced jet' I've had quite a few children in my class with names that aren't pronounced the way I thought they were from reading them (some odd spellings, some not English names, some that have more than one possible pronunciation) I have never been offended by a parent or child correcting me and will always apologise and do my best to pronounce it properly, but if it's my accent I will explain that.

Ds2 is called Elijah, and I pronounce it with a hard J, many people seem to pronounce it with a soft J and it doesn’t bother me tbh (I have occasionally wondered if I am mispronouncing my own child’s name !). Saying that, I think Jett is very obviously like an aeroplane, and I like the way the poster above has suggested phrasing a correction, so I’d go with that.

So she should be saying it to rhyme with ‘wet’ but what she is saying sounds more like ‘whet’, where you slightly pronounce the h.

If all children were called either John or Jane it would solve a lot of heartache over stuff like this and spelling.
