Hopefully someone can help me with this one as I am not a particularly creative mum. DS has to dress as a faveorite book character on Friday as the school are having an author in and it is book day. Can anyone help me with ideas for something simple? He is 5 1/2 and in year 1

Hello Mumof2monsters - I am a theatre costume designer, so hope I can help!!!

Would be useful to know what your DS is into - what books he loves/characters then can try to help more with tips on what to use/how to make etc

mamazon · 10/06/2007 19:10

what books does he enjoy reading?

HighlandFling · 10/06/2007 19:22

OK I am going to waffle on anyway. Assuming your DS is Harry Potter age, so wizard might be a good option (although probably not v original). Noddy would be relatively easy to achieve, A mister man might be fun. Deciding factor is if you have sewing machine/are good with your hands? What else, what else - Peter Pan would be good, or a character from that . Hmmm, think that is about it from me for now as my ds is only 1 year old so not quite up to speed with 5 year old essential reading

Horrid Henry - normally school uniform but a lot scruffier

HighlandFling · 10/06/2007 19:40

Horrid Henry? Who he? I have reading to do!!!

HighlandFling · 10/06/2007 19:45

oooh - he really does looks horrid, doesn't he

compo · 10/06/2007 19:45

My ds went as Harry from the bucketful of dinosaurs - red top and blue shorts plus a bucket of toy dinosaurs. Dd went as a knight with normal clothes plus a sword and shield.

She has also been as a pirate (Treasure planet). If you are on the ORT books you could always do Biff / Chip / Kipper (sorry, forget which is the girl!) or even Floppy!

If he is into Enid Blyton there are the wishing chair or Faraway Tree characters (saucepan man has always sounded like a fun thing to do )

HighlandFling · 10/06/2007 19:50

Dickens - very high brow. The Artful Dodger would be fun too. You could teach him to pick his teachers pockets

christywhisty · 10/06/2007 20:06

DS has done
Hagrid. old jacket tied with string.brown fur material to make hair and beard)

Denentor(black clock scary mask)

Prefessor Quirrell turban with a horrible mask at back of head.

Dr Doolittle (a top hat made out of card board with little animals stuck around it, little mouse sticking out of waistcoat pocet etc)

this year he was Wheres Wally

Striped top, glasses, red and white striped bobble hat.

Clary · 11/06/2007 00:24

We have done a knight or King Arthur or Peter from Narnia (use costume you have/cardboard shield etc)

Also mouse from the gruffalo - greay jumper and trews, tail and ears on headband

Or Horrid Henry - scruffy boy; Harry Potter pretty easy too.

Do you have any costumes he likes? Lots of boys esp come as Spiderman or superman (from a book? )

nappyaddict · 11/06/2007 01:19

rupert the bear?
christopher robin?
aladdin?
the mad hatter or tweedle dum/dee?
someone from:

wizard of oz
wind in the willows
how the leapord got its spots
treasure island
gulliver's travels
famous five/secret seven would be quite easy

A box? I'm intrigued...I'm going to hunt for it!

LIZS · 11/06/2007 10:16

Thomas the Tank engine (mask as his face, top hat as funnel, blue tracksuit with no 1 in yellow taped on ) or the Fat Controller

mumof2monsters · 11/06/2007 10:37
