YR 2 forgetful/organisation

Please can you tell me if this is normal for a YR 2 nearly 7 yr old.

Letters from school need replies. Reply in the bag but doesn't get handed in.

Reading book in his tray, doesn't make it to his bag, so no reading book for a week.

Reading diary in his bag, couldn't find it to hand in. It was in his bloody bag!

Homework not handed in. It was in his bag.

I feel he should be taking more responsibility, I make sure everything that needs to be, is in his bag. I can't go in to class and hold his hand, remind him a dozen times, then hand it in myself.

What do I do? Eye roll until he improves as he gets older? Or is this an actual issue? I want my son to grow up to be a man, not a man child who needs a wife to do his life admin for him.

My eldest is in Y2 and they have a routine in the morning where they empty their book bags. Some do forget and go marching into the classroom with their book bags - the teacher then reminds them they need to empty their book bag (put reading book in the pile, hand in any forms etc). The teacher also makes sure reading books go straight into book bags. I think if there wasn't a set routine and the teacher enforcing it many would forget. Could you have a quick word with the teacher and ask him/her to remind DS.

I think it's very normal. He is still very young. My ds is 10, still forget things sometimes.

If there's important thing that handing in that day, I tell him to hold it in his hand instead of putting it in the bag.

Ok. I'll have a chat with his teacher. We've now missed the deadline for the flu vaccine because he had the reply in his bag for a week.

There is a routine in terms of what needs to be in on each day, but reading books are changed twice a week. Reading diary reviewed once a week, homework in once a week and so on. I thought maybe teachers don't spoon feed this kind of thing anymore because they should be able to do it. I might be brave and ask some of the other mums in class.

I think there was definitely introduction of more independence in yr2, getting ready for upper primary. But letters in book bags, I did check everyday myself at that age.
If the days to hand in something is fixed, you can make some sort of reminder and hang on the wall in his room, by the door, etc, where he can see before he leaves for school.

He is only 6 years old!! ask the teacher to remind him for a few weeks and then to gradually ease off the reminders and see how he goes.

I still have to remind my Y2 daughter (who has a ridiculous memory and never forgets ANYTHING) that "you have a letter in your bag to hand in" as she goes in in the morning at the moment.

My other child has dyspraxia and she has a checklist on her book bag of everything that goes into school that needs to come home from school too.

Luckily our letters go straight into the office from parents.

Maybe a reward chart for sorting book bag stuff?
