Yr 6 - English writing

How can I help ds with his writing and grammar.

When he does a piece of specific grammar work he is fine and understands how to use grammar. So in a specific grammar test he gets high marks and does well.
The problem is the grammar does not transfer to his general writing in English . So if he is asked to write for example a two page story- it is very simple and not yr 6 level although he is supposed to be an all round high ability. I am become increasingly anxious about the level of written work he produces as he is supposed to be starting at a very academic secondary school next year. Any ideas please?

it could be he just can't multi-task all the different skills at once. Get him to write based purely on content and ideas, then go through it again correcting spelling and grammar. (he may need to do that in two stages) This is what my daughter is being taught to do at school.
