DK readers

Just wondering if anyone knows what the DK readers Level1 are the equivalent to in terms of school reading schemes ? Google hasn't proved very helpful !

My son has developed a love of reading over the summer break and has been independently reading various DK readers L1 and some L2 with support, borrowing lots of books from the library.

He returned to school this week (Y1) and was very upset that his teacher gave him a yellow ORT book which he had already read several months ago. I tried to explain that it's a new term etc but just wondered what to mention to the teacher if he continues to bring home yellow books as I don't want him to become disheartened !

I’d give them a few weeks at school to settle then ask them to reassess his book band

Some kids won't have read anything over the summer and regressed some will have done loads of reading and jumped forward so naturally the teacher will take time to assess where they're at. If he read the book fluently say so in the reading book. That said it's normal for DC's to bring home books that are easier than they're able to read at home. They need to work on expression, flow, comprehension etc not just fluent reading.

As much as possible it's important to make it about enjoying reading and minimise attention on the reading level the child's on. By Year 1 DS was reading lots of non phonics books to match his interests (see inside, dirty Bertie, early reader etc.) so I'd go with that after school. From what you've said he'll probably go up reading levels in school too.

This happened to DD, though in her case the first book she brought home in Y1 was ten bands lower than her band at the end of Reception, so it was easy for me to reassure her that it was simply an admin error! I made a note in the reading record, and it was corrected the following week.

I would agree with a PP that making a note in the reading record is a good first step, mentioning how your DS has progressed with his reading over the summer, and requesting for him to have his reading level checked.

Give it a couple of weeks. DD1 transferred schools between Reception and Y1 and the teacher had to roughly guess what book band to send home allowing for summer and slipping back a bit... couple of weeks tweaking of rather random book band books ensued before she settled stably into the swing of things.

I think my youngest has jumped forward rather than back over the summer (she's developed the splendid habit of annoying her older sister by reading HER books over her shoulder and is making a bloody impressive crack at it) but I'm expecting school to play it conservatively with what they send home this week and then fiddle after that.
