Hi my DS starts reception tomorrow. He has a school uniform small book bag but it it normally ok to bring a normal rucksack (his is Star Wars!) for him to bring a spare set of clothes? Was not sure due to the uniform

Are the spare clothes a requirement? My daughter just took a book bag, and PE bag which was left for a half term at a time. Everything went in the book bag! Didn't really need a rucksack for anything. The older years do take rucksacks, and there are many styles including Star Wars! Guess it depends on the individual school. Hope he settles in well tomorrow, and you don't have too much of a weep Smile

i would send him in with it,and if the school teacher says something then you can sort it out the next day. hope this helps and good luck!

They will probably be glad he has brought in extra clothes. Good luck to your ds

My daughter went with a backpack today. I just hate book bags!! They're awful!

As for spare clothes, they don't really need them but if it makes you feel better, just put an extra polo shirt and school trousers in.

Mine had a set of spare clothes just in case - but not uniform just clean dry clothes underwear and socks.

Does he want to leave his bag at school?

Ours aren’t allowed rucksacks, they just don’t have the space to store. They keep their Pe kits in school and use those for spare if needed.

Our school doesn't allow rucksacks book bags only. If u need to put a spare set of clothes in I would put them in the pe bag. When my daughter was in reception I put a small waterproof coloured bag (eBay) in her book bag with a pair of knickers in no one could tell what it was and was there for emergencies

I wouldn't unless you've been told to or knows he has toileting accidents. Cloak and classroom space in lots of classes is really really limited. My daughter does leave spare clothes and clean up stuff in school but it's prearranged with school as she's got medical issues causing her continence problems at times and I just use a PE-style drawstring bag to make it as compact as possible for them to store in school. It's on her SN paperwork that she has her bag to keep in school too.

If you're worried - take it with you and ask I guess.

Most schools have a limited supply of spare clothes they can change kids into if there's a need (it's not usually wee but overzealous water tray play) although it does dwindle as stuff goes home and doesn't come back.

In reception the uniform was a school branded polo shirt and tracksuit. Ours had small backpacks for their breaktime snack, hat, sunscreen, water bottle, and homework sheet / reading books, with spare plain tracksuit bottoms in uniform colour, a spare plain white T shirt in the bottom of the bag and spare pants, inside a pair of carrier bags (figured that any soiled clothes could go back in there if the spares were needed). They were needed! DS had an upset stomach once, and both of them had various incidents involving paint, water, food, etc.

We just put spare pants/tights/skirt in the P.E. bag for my just-4-year-old who was likely to have the odd wee accident.

Ask one of the teachers or teaching assistants tomorrow Smile I'm sure they'll let you know what they would prefer. Sounds like a good idea, but would really depend on the space that the school has! Just make sure everything (even socks and the inside of shoes) is labelled. Teaching nightmare - 30 children getting changed for pe/ needing to take shoes off for something and there being several identical copies of everything with no name!

My child was expected to have spare clothes at school in reception. They just stayed on his peg all year in a carrier bag.
