Manchester Grammar (MGS) - Yr 4 Assessment

Hi,

I'm putting my son in for the Year 4 Manchester Grammar School entrance exam. I sent them his end of year report and he's been invited in for assessment. (Do most kids get 'through' to the assessment?)

There are always more kids than places with this school. Does anyone know how many kids are typically assessed each year? I believe they're putting on a new class next year, so there would be say 16 spaces available.

Also, does anyone know the structure of the assessment? and what I can do to prepare him?

TIA

Great choice of school. I went there myself (many years ago!) and my father taught there for over 20 years.

The junior school assessment is focused more on ability to learn rather than what the child already knows. To that end, they take some classes on topics that should be completely new to them and are then tested to see what they have learnt. Because of this, you can’t really prepare your son in terms of knowledge, so you should focus more on making him feel relaxed and looking forward to the day.

I don’t know about the success rate for Y4 applications, but the fact that your son has been invited for assessment means his chances should be good. MGS wants applicants to be successful and they do flex class sizes if necessary to make sure they take in all kids who do well.

Good luck!

Hi CarlieBee, I wondered how your son got on as we are looking to do the same Year 4 assessment but at short notice, with no prep, and after lockdown home school... Trying to have faith in the 'no need to prepare' claim but it is hard knowing how many children, naturally enough, will have been preparing for this assessment!

@daintymouse how did your son get on? We did the assement for year 4 too in 2020, so that would make our son in the same year. He’s just started in September. Would be great to get to know other parents as we’re new to the school x

@nh12 can I ask how ur son is getting on and how the assessment day was. Thinking of my son going there and what I should be doing to prepare him!

I’ve got to say I was a little worried but now that he’s started I’m so impressed, it’s amazing. They just offer everything. What year assessment is your son going to sit? We did the assessment for year 4

I’ve got to say what DH26 it’s exactly right, it’s very difficult to prepare, but I will try to help if I can x
