EYFS next steps

Due to my surprise at something else in DS’ report, I did not at the time read the ‘next steps’. Apologies if I am being super dim, but could someone please give examples for how I may achieve the following...

‘To apply his maths skills further by creating his own problems to solve’

Given it states that he must create his own problems, I don’t know whether it is something we can do together? The literacy steps are self explanatory and this is the only maths one, thank you.

It depends on where he's at in terms of his maths, but things like grabbing 2 toys and deciding which is taller/heavier/shorter etc etc, or finding one more than the number of raisins he has on his plate?

My understanding of 'next steps' is that it's not necessarily something you need to work on at home with him OP - it could be something they'll be encouraging him to work on in school time.

But anyway, I think it means if he's just been taught to do something (eg add together two numbers 2+2), the next step would be to formulate his own problem (eg 3+4) because by setting up the new problem he's demonstrated that he understands the type of thing he's being asked to do.

Notyourmummy - He was exceeding for maths with a list of all the things he is capable of followed by this next step. Hopefully, if he has solidly understood these concepts then I’m not doing him a disservice by not practising any.

I was under the impression we were supposed to do bits and pieces over the summer to keep them ticking over. I’ll just leave him to it. His literacy next steps are to use more and different punctuation, but he hasn’t chosen to do any writing yet either .

I think in terms of specific concepts it usually means the child does a set of problems (e.g 12 sweets shared with 3 people - how many sweet each, 18 toys shared between 2 children how many each etc etc) then the child is asked to invest their own similar problem

But you're right no need for you to personally undertake this at home!

Tbh sometimes they aren’t even up to date IME. For ds this would have meant the need to rearrange number bonds and find alternative ways of getting to twenty or rearranging an addition sum to use subtraction.

If he is exceeding, I don't think you need to worry too much.

Thanks all, I’m just leaving him to his Lego and reading. It was reassuring to learn from more experienced Mums that I am not expected to execute the next steps throughout the holidays.
