Feeling very impatient...has anyone applied for in school admission since start and school holidays and had a response yet?

I applied a week ago on Friday when it opened and still not heard anything and just want to know!!!

Is this the UK?

Usually there are nationally set response dates. Did you have any indication of when there would be a response?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 03/08/2018 19:47

Do you mean an in year admission?

PatriciaHolm · 03/08/2018 20:57

This is presumably an in-year admission for September?

Did you apply to the school or LA? During the holidays you may struggle to get a response unless the LA already know there are vacancies where you want a place.

Hi yes my typo!

I doubt you’ll hear anything until the new term now.

Jojomay · 03/08/2018 21:18

Yes it was via the LA. Was concerned about that as we are due to move to a new location over the summer. We won’t be able to take my boy to his school originally allocated as it will be 30 miles away from our new house. What would happen in this scenario?

Our Borough won't even process applications until the start of the new term even if it means the child being out of education.

Bring back the days when school controlled admissions and you could take your kids to school and start a couple of days later.

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 03/08/2018 21:20

Our LA is refusing to tell schools when they have processed admissions and the school have to check daily because they are so snowed under. So I suspect it might be a piece of string question!

Awfulness · 03/08/2018 21:21

Jojo is he meant to be starting reception?
You tell the allocated school and LA you have moved and he can't attend and he will have to stay at home until the new LA deal with it. Been in this situ!

We applied mid August last year for a September start and it took 10 days from submission of the form to receive an offer

Jojomay · 09/08/2018 15:02

Hi just to let everyone know we got an offer for our first choice today.

Bit of a panic when we got a letter through the post offering us out third choice. We contacted the LA and there had been some issue where third choice and first choice were placed with equal preference somehow (bit odd). Anyway our first choice still had vacancies so we have been offered that one. Really lucky as still living at our home in London rather than new address but appears to have been a low birth year!

Last year I applied for in-year transfer about 2-3 weeks to go till the end of term, was confirmed after the 1st week of the holidays. I did then contact the school via email (I'd been told to do this by the school just as the LEA system of relaying this could be a bit shit at times and someone would be picking up mailbox messages over the summer) just to let them know we'd accepted the place and when they were back for INSET before the term started they got in touch with me to arrange for DD1 to go in slightly early the day term started to be shown to her classroom and her teacher rather than going in via the playground route.

Jojomay · 09/08/2018 20:15

Thanks. We have emailed the school but was concerned about whether we would get a response. That sounds like a good idea so at least they can be a little familiar before they start

We didn't hear anything back from the school until the end of the holidays when the staff were obviously in for INSET before the kids came back - and school had had a fair expectation DD1 was going to be heading their way as they knew we were applying before they broke up and it was just a matter of hoping no one nearer had applied for the one place they had in that year group (DD2 had already secured a place - all quite last minute as basically things had gone to shit at DD1's then-current school)!

Both settled absolutely fine incidentally - DD1 went into year 1 - having only seen through the railings to the playground of the school and not knowing anyone - school managed her coming in unconventionally absolutely superbly. DD2 was fine going into Reception having not done any of the introduction sessions - just wandered in like she'd been there forever (she at least had had a look around the school unlike her sister).
