How much uniform for reception?

Probably a daft question!

My son is starting school in September and I am wondering how much of each item of uniform to buy for him. His school uniform is fairly simple - grey trousers, red or white polo and sweatshirt either plain or with logo.

While he's been at preschool, he has generally come home looking like he's been down the minesConfused

How much uniform have people bought for their children and was it enough? I work full time and don't have a tumble drier to dry uniform once it's washed.

Thanks in advance!

6 of everything. They keep a spare set in school. Our school does 2nd hand sales and I get as much as I can from them. I too yo with generic stuff from supermarkets. The only things I’ve had to get new are some logo polos. As of September, I’ll have 3 in uniform, too difficult to keep track of laundry if I don’t have enough for a whole week. Especially with work.

I've bought enough for each day of the week and some spares. But then I know DD is a messy eater and she will be in the wraparound care from 7.30am till 5.30pm. It's so cheap it just works out easier and pack sizes meant 6 complete uniforms. It would have cost more to buy just 5.

I think there's another 25% off at Sainsbury's starting this week or next if anyone still needs to stock up.

I’ve got 2 logo jumpers, 1 logo polo and 4 plain polos, 2 pairs of trousers (although reading this I can see I might need more!), shoes, socks, PE bag, book bag, 2 PE t-shirts and 2 pairs of PE shorts. DS is our only child in uniform though and I have a tumble dryer and easy access to shops/supermarkets which stock uniform so hopefully it’ll be enough to start with.

I've found everything except sweatshirts come in packs of two.

This year (DS - Y1) I've bought
3 X sweatshirts
4 X polo shirts (not white!)
4 X trousers
2 X shorts

I found that halfway thru last year he grew out of his clothes and in the spring I couldn't find any I'm the shops! He hated getting a too-small jumper on and off. So this year I've bought some in the next size up too. (Also useful for clean-washing emergencies!)

When small I bought enough for one everyday, they always came home mucky.

Also sent a whole change of clothes into school in the PE bag for when they were needed. Often just because they decided to soak themselves playing in the water tray.

If your DC sometimes still has toilet accidents then spare pants and plastic bags too.

Oldest is going into Y6. I have only ever bought one logo'd sweatshirt per child (per year) for wearing on school photo day etc. The others have been supermarket clothes. (For what it's worth my preference is Sainsbury's)

I'm so jealous of you all using superMarket jumpers. Ours all have to be logo ones so I'm not keen on the prospect of buying 5!

i had 2 jumpers. they are polyeste, so pretty much wipe clean

HenriettaArabella · 16/08/2018 20:48

Invest in vanish powder and have enough to go through a whole week without washing

Cornwall73 · 21/08/2018 06:19

qumquat same here. Uniform is only top half and it must be a logo tshirt, long sleeve top, sweatshirt or fleece. I have twins!
Going to get 4 tshirts and one long sleeved top each.

For those with logoed jumpers - have a look back on old newsletters on the website for Summer/Xmas fair times of year see if they do a uniform stall on those events. We used to have DD1 at a school where if the head could have got away with it she'd have brought in school logoed underpants she was that logo obsessed - and they sold a lot of stuff off on their Xmas fair stalls. Or put a shout out on your local FB groups to get outgrown ones (I sold them on for like a fiver instead of £16 new). Until I got some second hand ones to up our supplies I only had a couple to start with - at least they washed well... for the bloody price we paid they should have done!

Mine requested the not-logoed cardigans this year (school is so hot I think they found they were a bit thick for them) so it's been supermarket tastic. I've got them 4 cardigans each - but they're red so do tend to show stains from board markers and the like more easily and I'll probably have two in rotation and then the reserve team to swap in halfway through the year when they really start to look battered.
