Hi my dd moves up to year 1 in September and I'm wondering what year kids stop using their book bag and go towards a backpack type bag? Thanks.

My DD has always used a backpack, never a book bag

StrawberryStar · 29/07/2018 20:36

DD switched going into year 2, mainly because it was too difficult to carry the book bag if it had more than a book I’m it. It kept opening and stuff falling out meaning I ended up carrying it.

dangerrabbit · 29/07/2018 20:36

In our school it is in year 3.

WhiteHartLane · 29/07/2018 20:36

At my boys school it is book bags Yr R to Yr 2. Backpacks Yr 3 onwards.

lorisparkle · 29/07/2018 20:37

Our school has a rule that they are not allowed rucksacks however I believe this is a particularly stupid rule as we walk/scoot or bike to school and book bags are rubbish! We started breaking the rule in year 5 when they started walking to and from school by themselves.

elliejjtiny · 29/07/2018 20:37

When they started secondary. All the dc at my boys school have a book bag for their books, letters, homework etc that comes home every day and a back pack for pe kit that comes home at the end of every half term for washing.

MozzchopsThirty · 29/07/2018 20:38

Mine always had a backpack and book bag

BusySittingDown · 29/07/2018 20:40

At my DC’s Primary school they aren’t allowed back packs as they have to keep their stuff in lockers and back packs don’t fit in them. DD1 goes to High School in September so she’ll be getting a back pack for then.

Had they been allowed to take back packs to school I probably would have got one for year 2/3 when they start wanting to take in their own pencil cases in to school. There is not much you can fit in a book bag.

bluerunningshoes · 29/07/2018 20:40

my dc never had a book back.
they are horrendusly bad for posture&back especially if dc walk to school.
backback all the way, books and sheets in a plastic binder thingy.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 29/07/2018 20:42

End of y2.

IHeartKingThistle · 29/07/2018 20:42

Year 3

BusySittingDown · 29/07/2018 20:43

Our school say you can take a back pack if you cycle to school but it has to be kept in a locked box, which is outside! Therefore you have to transfer all your stuff from the back pack into something else that will fit in the locker which is a faff!

Twodogsandahooch · 29/07/2018 20:43

Year 2 when her book bag died.

Whatififall · 29/07/2018 20:46

Year 3

Cherubfish · 29/07/2018 20:48

DS - not until secondary
DD - year 4

heavandhell · 29/07/2018 20:49

Year 3.

SpacePenguin · 29/07/2018 20:53

What on earth is a book bag? (I did Google before asking)

outofmymind26 · 29/07/2018 20:54

It's a Junior thing here. When you get to year 3 you don't have to use a book bag any longer.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 29/07/2018 20:56

At our school back pack are not allowed as all book bags must fit within the designated book bag box.

aperolspritzplease · 29/07/2018 20:57

Y2 officially is supposed to be y3 but I was sick of all the extra stuff we had to carry that didn't fit in the stupid book bag.

user789653241 · 29/07/2018 21:33

Allowed from yr3 onwards.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 29/07/2018 21:39

Thanks all. I just didn't want her being left out but agree she probably doesn't need one! @SpacePenguin it's a rectangular shaped flat bag with a carry handle and a strap with the school badge on the front. So quite literally a bag you would put flat books in.

When she stopped getting large picture books as her reading book and when she starting regularly cycling to school, so Year 2 (or maybe part way through year 1, can’t quite remember). It is impossible to cycle with a book bag.

3boysandabump · 29/07/2018 21:46

At my dc school they use both. Book bag for books, letters etc and backpack for pe kit

Pascha · 29/07/2018 21:50

Ds1 got one for the start of yr2 as I refused to buy a second book bag for DS2 for reception. Ds2 is moving to a backpack in September for yr1 as the book bag has a biggish hole in the corner.

Beyond reception I think they are pointless. A backpack is much better at holding reading journal, homework book, spelling book, jumper, water bottle etc.
