Summer games/maths to keep 6 yr old busy

Just after some ideas to keep my son (6, just finished Yr 1) up to date/develop over the summer.

He’s fairly bright, without being exceptional (got 1, greater depth for all core parts on report so in all English and maths, then some other 1s but mainly 2+ on other subjects in report) so I’m not concerned but would just like to keep him ticking over/extend. He’s a fact magnet so will read and read, especially fact books.

I’d love to know recommendations for games in the car/on line resources /Apps you’d recommend just for us to slot in. He’ll be going to sports clubs and adventurers type clubs some of the time while I’m working and the reading will be covered by the summer reading challenge from the library but just interested in other tips.

I think prodigy is a very good maths online games. It's a maths site, but has elements of fun by catching the monsters by answering a questions right, so a bit like pokemon. It will adjust the level of difficulty to your child.

Also poptropica is not a maths game, but encourage the children with problem solving.

Both can be played as a member/non member(we are non member), and totally safe for young children.

What kind of maths ‘games’ would you recommend playing, eg in the car?
-double
-halves (how big would the numbers be you’d expect a 6 year old to deal with for these)?
-number bonds to 5/10/20
What else should I expect Yr 1 going into Yr 2 to do? My 4 yr old can do those (except no bonds to 20) so presume I should be doing something a bit more complex with the 6 year old?

• do you get them to write things down too or just say them?

I’ll probably go over the spellings again as I think he has a great short term memory but may not remember them all now.

There are quite a lot of exercise books that have stickers etc in Aldi and Lidl at the moment left over from the school events. I got my son some maths ones and a general year 2 book. They had phonics and writing too IIRC.

Also interested in car games, eg out loud questions (I suppose this is mental maths??) that you’d play?

Play the car game. car=1point, lorry=5 points mini=20 points, vw campervan=50 points, aston martin=1 million points.

See what he can get to. If anyone else is in competion feel free to adapt the points values

Do you know the pub legs game? So you add up how many legs in the name of each pub you pass, eg the King William would be two, the cricketers would be 22, the fox and hounds...er depends how many hounds I guess! Anyway maybe you can adapt.

Oo, great Acunnigruse! Not heard of that before but what a great way to get a 6 year old observing the world abd explaining the complexities of pub names!

Hit the Button online has basic adding / take away/ halves and doubles. You go against the clock so bit of fun in beating your own record.
Also a basic rings game..throwing rings..helps with adding up scores quickly..yours and his.
Playing cards too.

My son has just started the DoodleMaths summer challenge and is absolutely loving it. He's been using it for 10 to 15 min a day on my iPad.

We got the login through his school but I believe you can also sign up as at home and get a free trial.

In lidl just now the have maths books that come with a white board marker so he can fill it in and do it again or just draw on if he wanted to

Won't they be beginning times tables in Y2? There are lots of times tables resources available, including CDs for in the car.
There's a car cricket game you can play, where I think different colour Cara give you different numbers of runs, but I don't remember the exact rules any more
