Compulsory uniform?

Hello

Does anyone know whether uniform can be enforced as compulsory in state primary schools in England?

My DC go to a CofE school (our closest school, we’re not religious) and the head has decided to change the colours of the uniform (that’s a whole other thread...) She has stated that the logo’d jumpers can only be purchased through the school and are compulsory.

I’m not going to refuse to dress my DC in the new uniform, but I had a feeling that uniform is not compulsory in state primaries. Is this right? Or is it up to the school?

Thank you!

Is it an academy?

There is usually a grace period where old and new style uniform is acceptable. When this happened at my kids schools both times it was new uniform for new starters and old style for the rest of the school year. (Changes announced early autumn)

If money is an issue, schools often allow Pupil Premium money to help with uniform costs.

It’s not an academy, just a state run CofE primary...
The financial implications do concern me, but it’s more of a moral objection! We can afford the new uniform but other parents may not be able to...
I just would like to know whether, legally, a state primary school can enforce a uniform...

The link below sets out current policy. \www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/514978/School_Uniform_Guidance.pdf

Thank you poster Ginnotginger - I've read that document but am still not entirely clear. I'm not even sure it's aimed at primary schools as you could hardly punish a 6 year old with detentions etc. for not wearing proper uniform as at that age it would surely be the responsibility of the parent?
There's definitely guidance there though that says schools shouldn't restrict parents to a sole supplier and that uniform should be readily available and good value...
