Keeping children engaged in the afternoon.

How long are your afternoon lessons? Ours is from 1:00 pm to 3:30pm.

Any tips on keeping children focused for that length of time. I teach year 4

Our school, DD is now in Y6, always does practical stuff in the afternoon. Arts, music, science, PE, D&T. I assume this is to have them carrying on after the lure of lunch.

They do have French and RE as well in the afternoon but that is just every other term.

We have 2 lessons timetabled every afternoon as well as running our “daily mile” at some point in the afternoon.

Maybe ask for your post to be moved to “the staff room” section, as that’s for teachers rather than here.

Ours run from 1.30 to 3.30. We do topic, science and music, sometimes PE. I am ks2 as well. We have story from about 3.15 though.

1 pm to 2.10 is a lesson......science, history, geography etc
2.10 to 2.30 playtime
2.30 to 3pm finishing off
3pm to 3.30 story/ reading

I do:
1- 1.20 Class Novel
1.20- 1.40 Silent reading
1.40- 1.50 Wake n Shake/ Go Noodle
1.50- 2.50 Afternoon lesson
2.50- 3.00 Play
3.00-3.20 Basic skills (tables and spelling practice)
Game/ sort letter etc
3.30pm Hometime

Keeps them busy but steady.

That's a long afternoon!
I would be taking them out for a 5 min run around part way through.

Wow, playtime in KS2? That stopped in Y3 at our school.
