Withdrawal

Hi, my dd receives literacy support in the form of withdrawal once a week. This basically means the SENCO works directly with her and a small group of other children - I actually am not completely sure why she goes as she is in the top reading group and seems to be doing well. She does have an IEP which is due to her poor motor skills so was receiving extra help with handwriting initially. This stopped and more recently she has been going to the SENCO as above - she tells me she just plays games when she goes. I haven't really discussed it with her teacher as she has had a run of stand in teachers due to hers being on maternity.

Today we received a note to say that all withdrawal is stopping from September due to budget cuts.

Is this allowed? If children require withdrawal, can the school really not provide it?

Not really sure if I understand. You say you are not sure why she gets the literacy support since she is in top group, and your dd tells you she only plays games. But you are not happy about it's going to stop?

I think you need to speak to school and tell them what you want/expect them to do. If she needs support for motor skills, you need to tell them, not just accepting whatever they offer.

I was a primary school teacher pre-children. Do you meet with the class teacher to sign the IEP every year? I used to have to meet every parent and explain the reasons it was in place and what interventions we were implementing to help. If you don’t know what she’s doing in her groups I’d go directly to the SENCO or headteacher. Just call the school office to make an appointment. Don’t worry too much about it all being games, this may well just be your child’s perception of learning in a fun way.
