My dd has just returned to school after a year home ed. She has been back 7 school days and has already had 5 consecutive break time detentions resulting in NO BREAK AT ALL. Reasons given: left her reading record at home. Only one reading record entry over the weekend instead of two, insufficient internet research x 2. She feels there is nothing she can do and already doesn't want to go to school. Anyone experience anything similar?

How old is she ?
Obviously you might not want to give more information, but, was she HE'd because of difficulties within school in the first place? In which case you'd have thought a 'managed return' would have worked with these things.

Of course, regardless of all that, breaktime detentions for things such as you describe are ridiculous anyway, IMO (as a teacher and a parent). dc need the break, the space and time to actually move their bodies in between lessons.

I would be appalled. How old is she? In primary school there is no way a child should be kept in at break time even for things like poor behaviour. It is incredibly unhealthy both physically and mentally. I would be going into school to make sure this has really happened and to make sure it stopped straight away.

Jesus, what is happening to our education system! No wonder kids hate school. If my children were young again now, I would not put them through the state school system - even if it meant I had to home school. Many primary teachers really can't see the wood for the trees. It's all trickle down crap from the government, of course.

It depend on age I think. I think getting detention for leaving reading record seems harsh, but others are similar in My ds's school from ks2,
assuming reading record entry and internet research was part of homework.
At our school, if they don't complete their homework at home, they will be asked to complete at school during breaks in ks2. And they can do internet research type homework at school, if you have no internet access at home.

Depends on the age and length of detention. I had a break detention for not bringing in homework before. It's was a 15 min break. Even at lunch they only take 15 mins for detention. Homework is a part of school life and if you don't bring it in teachers can only assume it wasn't done. Is there a reason they didn't put two reading logs down or do the required Internet research?

I agree with PP, how old is your DD?

DD is in Y6 and while she doesn't have proper detentions homework and reading is expected and they have to do it in school first thing if they miss out.

They are also expected to do homework to a certain standard, it is all preparations for secondary. They get help and advise how they could have done these things better or pointers for what to look out for in the future.

Didn't you check her work? At 10/11 I still check that DD a) has done her homework, b) that it is to a certain standard and c) all the stuff which has to be in school is in her bag in the morning. She does it independently but the duty to check is mine.

I would make an appointment with her teacher. Most likely these things are standard but not known to your DD so she needed at least some kind of introduction to the rules and what to expect.

It isn't "the Education system" AnnaFiveTowns, it is an oddity of this particular school, or even teacher, if this is actually what is happening.

Five detentions for four incidents? Does 'insufficient internet research' mean she didn't do her homework?

What year is she in?

Out of interest, why were you home educating and then why have you decided to send her back?

Just realised she had 2 research project within a week? That seems a bit excessive for primary school child.

Is the reason given coming from your DD or from the teacher? If DD, is she being honest (as it sounds very heavy handed!) and I'd then check with the teacher the reasons. If the teacher, look at the behaviour policy and see if it is being followed. If it is, then it feels extreme to me but it's what you agreed to as a parent when you enrolled your DD there so maybe a different school with a less strict policy would suit?
