Yr6 sex education videos

I went to a parent's meeting yesterday to see the videos that DDs class are going to be shown over the next couple of weeks.

Apart from being dated (Think 1990s) and badly acted which is pretty annoying, there is a scene of a vaginal birth. Nothing left to the imagination - a 'full frontal' shot of the woman before the head crowns and then the baby being pushed out.

I don't think I'm a prude but I'm not really sure it's appropriate for 11 year olds? I haven't had much of a chance to catch up with any other parents so wondered if I might be in the minority?

My dd is only a toddler but occasionally likes to look at my vulva and her own. Why do you think the video is not appropriate?

Maybe because I sat there cringing wanting to look away?

It's how babies are born. What's so bad about it. I saw a similar video at that age. I was fascinated. The reality of human beings is that some stuff we do is bloody. Better to accept it at a young age 💁‍♀️

Just because you don’t like something and did not want to see it does not make it inappropriate.

I would probably say it is appropriate, as it is in an educational context with an opportunity to ask questions.

Sounds exactly the video my kids both had in that year. I think it's fine - it's biology.

I think our school separated the boys and girls for it though.

Well it's a long time since I was 11 so what I find uncomfortable viewing she may, as you say, find hugely fascinating.

I'll just have a chat with her beforehand

I watched a similar video in Yr 4 at my village C of E primary school 35 years ago and was entirely unaffected. It is how babies come out. (I remember watching another one as a teenager and squirming, because by then I could relate to it more rather than just the strict biology of it, iyswim.)

I was more shocked to be honest that my own Yr 4 children got shown some rubbish about cats having kittens and “Well, erm, you figure it out from there kids” lessons to accompany it!

My dad , in his wisdom Hmm, decided to show me and my sister this type of video aged 5 and 7. I thought it was wonderful and spent the next week playing at having babies. Neither of us were scarred for life. Your 11 year old will be fine.
