Missing last week of school for Grandpas 80th?

I am debating weather to ask if its okay for the kids to miss the last week of school to travel to another country to celebrate their Grandpas 80th. Its really only my daughter who is in what is considered Year 1. She goes to a French school, so I am not sure about the rules and find out. I don't like her missing school, but its also a big birthday to celebrate. We just lost my father, so they only have one Grandpa left and I feel like life is so short and its important to celebrate and be there with family. Kids would have to miss a week, as the birthday is mid week and it takes like 10 hours to get there!

Definitely do it - last week of school is just fun stuff and your daughter is only in Y1 so the last week is of even less significance. The family event is much more important. You are options are:

  • for your children to have a "sickie"
  • for you to write to the school
If the latter you will need to be prepared for a reply not granting the time off and decide how will you manage that (comply or defy)? You may already have an idea of how supportive or otherwise the head is.

We just did that. School didn’t approve but if you’re from another country, it’s the only way for our children to experience big family festivities. I’m sure my child will manage to catch up

I would go. As you say life is short. She will have a great experience.

School are most unlikely to approve it but you are the parent at the end of the day and that means you have the full comprehension of your child's life and an understanding that school is not the only important thing. If you decide to go be prepared to either lie or pay the fine, unless of course the rules as different in this type of school.

I wouldn't hesitate to go, either approved or not. I wouldn't lie though. They will be too excited to tell the others!
