dyslexia screening

Hi,

My DS 8 (yr3) has just had the dyslexia screening test done at school and it has come back with a D - Moderate dyslexia. it also says it is just an indication.
school are putting in place lots of interventions for him so I am happy with that aspect of things.
my DH would like us to get him the test and school have said they will put him forward if we want but there is about a 2 year wait. we could pay for the test ourselves and have it done quicker.
so I am wondering if anyone has any experience of the test is it worth it, if we get it done , what difference is it to the test school have done??
My concern is getting the correct help if we were to move schools or for when he moves to secondary.
Thanks

We paid for it for our DS (7yo) and it was really helpful as we got a full in depth report on his specific strengths and weaknesses and how to help him, which the school has taken very seriously and used it to inform their support. The school also did their own test but that was more of an assessment by the senco of his writing and reading ability as opposed to an ed psych's much longer (took a couple of sessions) and deeper analysis. Can't remember the exact costs but think it was around £500 and felt very worthwhile in helping us the understand his situation. Mind you he is severely dyslexic so whether you'll think it's necessary might depend on how moderate i.e. how much of an issue it is.
