Child refused school place

Hi,

My child has been refused primary school first choice place, yet your next door neighbour has been given a place? Does anyone think this has rights to appeal?

I thought we would get into our first choice school as there are children on our road who have also previously attended the school so I didn’t actually think it was a problem. Especially seeing as I’m not the furthest person applying who has been offered a place

And your title is misleading - you weren’t refused a school place - you were offered a school place - you just didn’t get your top choice

Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 02:56

The school have already told us it was a straight line distance from the church.

You have to understand the admissions criteria so well - you were always going to be cat 4 so anyone cat 1-3 was always going to triumph you

applesandpears56 · 21/04/2018 02:57

Ah well then it’s straight line from church not edge of parish

Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 02:58

Yes but my neighbour a place and another person who is actually in a completely different borough, and as the crows flies works out nearly a mile further than my address to church

Further people than you have a sibling at the school (cat 2) or there’s been less pressure on admissions in previous years
You should never ever just put one school you want. There’s 6 choices for a reason.

applesandpears56 · 21/04/2018 02:59

You could check they put you cat 4 not 5/6?
Did they get her practising cert and supplemental form (if you had to fill one in?)

Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 03:00

I understand that but out of 22 in cat 4 only 1 refused being us. Even though someone was offered a place in the same cat 4 as us, and nearly a mile further from the church than us

OP posts:
Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 03:00

They do not have a sibling at the school

OP posts:
applesandpears56 · 21/04/2018 03:00

The different borough might have been a sibling or looked after child? (Cat 1 or 2?)

Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 03:01

Yes I handed in all the certs needed

OP posts:
Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 03:01

They are cat 4, not a looked after child i know them personally

OP posts:
Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 03:02

And they do not have a sibling in the school either

OP posts:
applesandpears56 · 21/04/2018 03:02

I can see what you are saying but you’ll not be able to know if the person further out is cat 1 or not?

Your best bet is to ask them for furthest distance for cat 4 and check they’ve put you as cat 4

applesandpears56 · 21/04/2018 03:04

And then if all right you could appeal on basis of being cat 4 and other cat 4s further away from you got a place

Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 03:04

I do know they’re not cat 1 as they are not a looked after child, cat 2 they do not have a sibling in the school, cat 3 they do not live in the church boundaries. They are cat 4 no cat 5s were accepted

OP posts:
Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 03:05

Will the school be able to tell me what cat I have been placed in?

OP posts:
Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 03:05

I did put other schools I would like my daughter to attend, we got 5th choice

OP posts:
applesandpears56 · 21/04/2018 03:06

I guess you also don’t know if the person living further out put the right address on their form or not?

Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 03:06

And I did not think she would get given that choice as it’s the furthest school away from us

OP posts:
applesandpears56 · 21/04/2018 03:07

Yes - school should tell you what cat you were

Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 03:08

They showed me their acceptance which in the corner had a different borough, so they definitely put the correct address unless they added something extra they are not telling me about.

OP posts:
applesandpears56 · 21/04/2018 03:08

Adopted child?

Truelylittle · 21/04/2018 03:09

I cannot see why they were offered if it’s meant to be a straight line distance and my distance is shorter than theirs? Am I just being upset over it or do I actually have a reason?
