Choosing a primary school in North Leeds

We are moving house soon within North Leeds. We're looking at the Moortown/Chapel Allerton/Roundhay/Oakwood areas. I have only lived in Leeds for a couple of months so have very little local knowledge.

Bearing in mind how our location may affect which school DS gets accepted for - I need decide now which school/s I want him to go to now before we start looking at houses.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction? I know Leeds schools don't have 'catchment areas' as such, but schools obviously give priority to children living closer to the school.

Have heard good things about Talbot primary school in Roundhay.

Any comments?

Once I find a school, how close would I have to move to it? A couple of streets away? Half a mile away?

I went to Gledhow Primary School, about 10 minutes walk from Roundhay Park and Oakwood, from 1977-1982. It had a good reputation but think that most schools in the Roundhay area are good.
Not sure how close you'd have to be to the school so hope someone else can help. Perhaps the education authority or the school you're interested in can help.

I'm in North Leeds myself. My next door neighbour's 4 children all went to Talbot primary school and they have all said it's a very good school.
Actually one of my old school friends teaches the 7 year olds there. She graduated with her teaching degree from Trinity and All Saints College (in Leeds) and was accepted there and is doing extremely well. I've been in a couple of times and seen her at work and she's a very good teacher.

Myself I'll be sending my children to St. Urban's primary school on Tongue Lane, Meanwood (next to Cardinal Heenan High School) because that's where I went myself and it's a good school with good Ofsted reports, but it's a Catholic school so might not be what you're looking for.

I taught in Leeds. It's a few years ago now, but I'm still in touch with teachers there. I also lived in Chapel Allerton, and at the time Chapel Allerton primary was fantastic (I did my teaching practice there). The others with good reputations were Talbot, Carr Manor, Gledhow.

So quite unsure where to rent /buy the house so he can go to a schooo with good reputation.
