Private school reading homework Yr 1

Hello. I am just curious how often private school children are bringing reading books home in year 1. My friend said her son brings a new book daily! Is this how often all private school children are bring reading books home? My dd brings 2 books a week. However, she is also in a French bilingual school so I understand things are different there, but I am just curious how often other kids are bringing reading books home to read. Another friend who has a ds at a state school brings two books a week home as well.

The children in my Y1 class (state primary) take home a new book every day.

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 07/04/2018 13:57

Our state school allowed kids to change their book as soon as they finish so up to 5 times a week.

anxious2017 · 07/04/2018 13:58

Daily.

vinoandbrie · 07/04/2018 14:36

Daily

suckysnow · 07/04/2018 14:37

Daily here too.

suckysnow · 07/04/2018 14:39

Actually, that’s not strictly true. It used to be daily, and he reads with his teacher daily, but now he’s on bigger chapter books (horrid Henry etc) he will read a few chapters a day, so sometimes same book will last a few days.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 07/04/2018 16:24

Daily in private and up to 6 books changed weekly in state for my niece’s schools.
Less often once the books were a bit longer.

Norestformrz · 07/04/2018 16:32

Sorry I should have made that clear. My children who are reading chapter books may obviously take more than one day to complete it.

it depends on how thick and difficult the books are. When DS was in year 1, he used to finish a book a day, and his form teacher told him to slow down. it's more important to make sure he understand the content.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 07/04/2018 22:10

My sons on the treetops books and gets three a week. When he was on biff, chip, kipper etc he changed them every day.

Mamabear12 · 08/04/2018 15:52

Thanks for all the responses! My dd understands the content after reading, as she is able to always answer all the questions asked at the end of the story. I wonder why her school and the previous one only give 2 books a week, when other schools give them more often. I guess it does not really matter, as we have loads of books at home. I was just curious how often other schools send the books home.

My DS is Yr1 at a private prep - he brings home a new book every day except one, unless he hasn't got through it all (he's now on chapter books, so they are taking longer for us to get through).

Naty1 · 08/04/2018 18:39

State school only 2 per week.
Y1 We used reading chest though since yr R and have been reading chapter books since start of yr 1. So reading books like roald dahl esio trot or DKS sophie stories.

lunar1 · 08/04/2018 19:04

Whenever they finish the one they are on. We are expected to read 10 mins a night in year one with them.

Andcake · 08/04/2018 20:17

Y1 state - a new one everyday from reception plus a weekly library book.
As books getting longer back when read!

buzzingmama · 10/04/2018 20:01

I'm a year 1 teacher in private. The kids in the class are divided up alphabetically. Names A-J are Monday and Wednesday. K-Z are Tuesday and thursday. Those are the days they are read with and changed. They are given usually 2 books on their day. If however, they have not finished or done reading at home, then books will not be changed

drspouse · 10/04/2018 20:03

State school and whenever he finishes it. I think your DCs must all go to much more academic schools though as he's still only on Biff & Kipper and reads 4 pages or so at home and the same at school most days and they are happy with his progress.

Dubdoor · 10/04/2018 20:08

State school using accelerated reader. In Yr1 they do reading every day. My DS is doing a quiz a day and bringing a new book home each day. He's on shorter chapter books now, but it's still a new book each day.

drspouse · 10/04/2018 20:15

We'd never have time to read even one Biff book a day, not with clubs and after school care etc etc. He's too tired so we do a few pages in the morning.

Zoflorabore · 10/04/2018 20:17

Dd is in state school and used to be daily when she was on short books but her most recent one is 48 pages so unlikely she would finish that on one night Smile

FlyingGoose · 10/04/2018 20:25

State school year 1. They get two books a time which are changed when they are read twice, so usually about 6 a week. Roughly half fiction/non fiction.

BikeRunSki · 10/04/2018 20:28

State primary - new book whenever you’ve finished. In DD’s case, two a day. Y1.

BlackInk · 11/04/2018 17:03

MY DD is in year 1 in a state school. They seem to read with her and change her book most days. They read a few pages with her at school and we finish it off at home usually. Although now she's moved onto longer books it might take us a few days to get through one. I only listen to her read for about 10 mins 3 or 4 times a week but she reads to herself in bed every night too.

sanam2010 · 13/04/2018 14:44

daily for sure, even in Reception (prep school).
