Yr 3 writing

Can anyone tell me about their child's writing progress?

my dd is in yr 3 and for the last few weeks has had 'teacher guidance' written on her work she is really annoyed and doesn't feel she needs this....i guess I'm just wondering if anyone has this situation but then their child has gone on to not need support once they were older say yr5 - positive stories pls!

Just to mention her reading is in the top third of the class and comprehension is ok too, just writing at length and making writing detailed and interesting she struggles with.

I’m a teacher- year 3. I bet it’s not because she’s doing badly with writing. Most likely she’s working just below ‘working at expected’ at the moment. The teacher is giving extra support because, with a bit of a boost, she’ll be working at the expected level in writing at the end of the year.

Ahh thank you for replying that's really helpful to know. I think I'll check with teacher hopefully that is the case.

I my school ‘guided’ would just mean that she was in a group with the teacher giving support. This might not mean that she is not performing or Woking below. It would probably mean that the teacher is introducing a new skill or new piece of learning.
We would expect that even the most able children are sometimes a part of guided groups so that they are being pushed.

Agree with whisper. Teacher guided could be written in there just so that the piece won't be used as judgment for assessment of independent writing. It could even mean that the teacher modelled the piece to the class first. If you are concerned, ask the teacher.

I think this week the teacher was asking her to put 2 adjectives into her sentences, something she knows and learnt in yr 2 bit doesn't always do when writing...... Would I be right in saying this means she needs a boost to get to yr 3 meeting expectations?

We have to put something like that on every child's piece of writing. That comment sounds like it's just reminding her to use adjectives so she can show she knows how.

We annotate either independent writing, adult guided or adult supported for all writing. When we make our termly assessments we can't use either of the latter as we have to evidence the child can fulfil the criteria without adult support or immediately after teaching a specific skill. I.e. We can't "tick" they can use fronted adverbials in a written piece in a lesson on fronted adverbials, or if I've teaching a group or individual and ask them to include one.

Teaching is also about coaching children in remembering and developing these skills, whereas that assessment has to from a piece written independently and at a distance from teaching or adult input. If your child is doing it all independently she's missing out on the teacher's teaching or coaching. It doesn't necessarily needing she is meeting the year3 curriculum, it's not even 2/3rds of the way through the year and every child needs that teacher input.
