Summer Born Reception Child's Writing

We are told DS is doing well in reception.Tonight he asked if we could write a book together. He doesn't normally write at home because he hates it, anyway, it struck me that his writing is as unreadable as it was when he started and his letters are formed all wrong. Is this ok for his age or do I need to be worried?

It says:
Wonder Woman vs Batman
Once there was a dragon his scales were red. He had flame on his wing. What did he eat? Fire.

All looks normal for reception. My year 1 kid has only just stopped forming letters incorrectly. He’s picked up speed and it’s much more legible though

Is he right or left handed? I ask because my dd reverses letters and she’s a leftie.

It’s not completely illegible. Especially when you look closer and see he’s used some phonetically plausible alternative spellings “eet” for “eat” etc.

I found that there was more of a focus on reading in reception and writing in year 1. That might explain the lack of handwriting progress if he’s coming on in leaps and bounds in phonics.

It is showing pretty classic features of just-learning-to-write kids: poor sizing, reversing letters etc. Definitely wouldn't worry about spelling at this point, he is still getting to grips with the mechanics of it. Possibly more relevant is the not enjoying it, could you find a way to relate it to something he does enjoy?

You don't need to be worried, but I would have a conversation with his teacher about the handwriting style used at school and how you can encourage him to start the letters in the correct place. Correct formation is actually really important, and it's hard for children to "un-learn" formation if it is incorrect.

He's right handed. He's never enjoyed writing or even drawing/ colouring.

Yes LittleFish that's what I'm worried about. Most of his letters he starts in the wrong place/ does backwards. Even when showed how to do them the right way round he goes back to doing it his way, which I don't want to become an ingrained habit.

My dd was born july 2013, so I assume same age. Her writing just improved a lot since she actually wanted to try it.

My son is very similar to yours just a year older. He is currently doing strengthening exercises as the strength in his hands is poor. He had only just started writing at home. Get him doing some threading exercises with besds and play doh.

Looks completely normal to me. I love what he wrote. It's really made me smile🤣

Looks about the same level of ability as my DC but they are being taught how to write each letter the right way and with the pre- cursive tails. The whole class were given laminated sheets that they can write on many times with arrows on th letters showing where to stat and which way to go.

Aw he’s only little. He’s doing great! DD’s writing was similar. Now 7 years on she has beautiful handwriting. Be proud of him. It’s too early to be worrying about neat handwriting and if all else fails he could be a Doctor

I'm really impressed that he sat down and wrote that story! And such a brilliant story too.

The handwriting looks normal to me for this age.

There was an article in the newspaper yesterday about children having poor pencil grip due to using a computer/phone/tablet too much. They have not developed their hand muscles. They don’t like gripping pencils because they find it difficult.

However I think this writing is a good attempt. In 6 months you will wonder why you were worried. Can he copy letter formation if you buy a book with the letters in it where you trace over the top? Use lined paper too.
