Guildford high school at 7+ is there any point?

Hi I'm looking at schools for my DD for year 3 entry. Out of all the schools for me GHS really stood out and is definitely my no 1. Going at 7 would be a huge bonus as then there would be no stress at age 11. It also seems silly to go tp another school with the hope of getting into GHS at 11, when she could just go at 7.

However they said there are between 5-8 places a year usually for year 3, so very low. My question is, should we try at 7 when chances of getting in are so small or just wait until 11+ when they have 70 or so places?

Thank you, all advice appreciated.

Where is your DD at the moment? If she's already at a school she can stay at til 11 and you think you want to try at 7+, I'd do that and try again the following year or so. One of our friends has just got in to GHS at 7+ and apparently there were lots of applicants for the places but I think that's probably the last of the high birth rate years for a bit so another year might be better?

That's interesting to hear, thank you. Do you have any idea how many applied? Do you mind me asking if you friend's dd was a state or independent school?
She can stay where she is until 11, it would just save all the stress of exams at 11 if she went at 7 and I would feel confident she was getting the best education possible. Since there are so few places though I worry she would feel a failure if she didn't get it and I don't want her feeling like that at 7! Ahh hard decision!

Hello, feel free to PM me - happy to share what knowledge I've got!

We are moving at 7 to avoid 11 plus stress for dd1 who is quite highly strung. Luckily assessment at our chosen school is quite soft and we have been reassured it should all be fine.

I don't feel the same way about dc2. I think their school until 11 and then 11 plus will be fine for them.

I think it depends on how you think your kids can cope with things.

I agree. It's just hard to know as dd is young for the year so currently only 5. Hard to know how much she can cope with. I presume schools should make the process as painless as possible for the children though. Thank you for your imput.

Obviously she would be 6 but the time she did the assessment but still young!

The daughter of a friend of mine got in at 7+ from a state school in Guildford, no problem. Give it a go.
