As parents/school staff there are always improvements we would like to see for our child/children’s school. Some of you may think they are too irrelevant to mention, or you may not have the confidence to voice your opinions to your child’s teacher or your colleague.
I am currently working in a primary school and would like to make some improvements. I would also like your opinions in case I have missed anything.
Thank you in advance.

Eh?
More money? More staff? Better resources children's services?

It might make sense if you say what your role in school is and what improvements you have already made. Every school is so different, your post doesn't really make sense!

Agree!
Adequate budget and access to necessary services and expertise

LEA, Academy or fee paying? Rural or Urban? What's your job title? Lots more information required if you want any useful responses.

Letsmaketheworldbetter · 21/01/2018 15:58

Sorry I’m trying to give as little info about myself as possible. This post is supposed to be very broad. Any little gripes that anyone has are very welcome. I literally mean any concerns, any annoyances, and improvements. Any bit of advice is welcome. BUT as you mentioned above more resources, more staff etc is beyond my control. All advice given will need to with current staffing and current resources.
Just imagine you could sit with your class teacher and lay all your cards on the table without repercussions. What would you say?

I would have thought that most improvements would be school specific. That said, a key issue on many threads is inadequate and poorly timed communication from schools.

Finola1step · 21/01/2018 16:05

In all honesty, I would say "My son has worked hard throughout his 5 and a half years at this school. Always does his homework, has never been in trouble, has never been late. Helps younger children. Tries his best. So why has he never had the coveted Governors' Award? Why is he passed over time and time again for the sports teams? When the list is full of kids who have been and are in and out of trouble".

Letsmaketheworldbetter · 21/01/2018 16:11

They are definitely school specific but a lot of the time they generally tend to be the same issues in each school.
My current issues/improvements are
•communication with parents
•more involvement needed from parents, •possible workshops for certain parents
•more support for children with SEN
•better time management
•eliminate time wasted making materials and concentrate more on children’s learning.

Please add to my list 😀

Thank you @finola very helpful and reasonable response. I feel the same about the reward system. Praise works very well for children with behavioural difficulties but that also means that sometimes they forget about the children who are constantly well behaved. That will be added to my list!

Governor here.

Giving out prizes for 100% attendance bug me. It's not fair for those who are genuinely ill/ unable to come to school.

A fairer system would be a reward for less than x episodes of absence with less than x late marks.

Letsmaketheworldbetter · 21/01/2018 16:34

Ive started exactly the same thread in AIBU as I thought I would get a lot more responses

@allinclusive I totally agree with you. I hate when a child is penalised for being sick or needing a docs appointment.

I am quite happy with our school, but only thing I really want is more provision for able children, not just helping those who are behind.

Letsmaketheworldbetter · 21/01/2018 18:09

@irvine please use the link to the thread above. That’s useful information. I’d like to keep all suggestions on the other thread. Add it on there, very valid point.
