Quotation marks - KS1/2

My DD's Y2 report mentioned she needs to work on her use of quotation marks.
I haven't had a chance to ask her teacher for more info and now it's the hols.
Is there an accepted standard that primary school children are taught so that I can go over them with DD?

And remember they are called "inverted commas" not speech marks!

Did you really get a report saying that, or was it more along the lines of "X is progressing well in writing, her current targets are improving her use of quotations"

As is seems a very odd thing for a teacher to call out as needing extra work outside of the school, particularly without giving some actual guidelines on what?

sirfred it was, as you say, in the context of good creative writing, vocabulary, punctuation etc, so I am fine with that.

Having found the link, it was reassuring that DD seems to be aware of what she ought to be doing and is just a matter of applying it. I wanted to make sure she hadn't misunderstood the "rules" and needed more help around this.

Just to add, I don't think the teacher expects us to work on this at home and she didn't indicate in the report that it was a problem per se.

It's also not actually in the curriculum until Y3.

Yes, like Feenie I was going to post that it's not actually on the Y2 curriculum. If she's been given that as a target I would assume that she's already secure at almost everything expected in Y2. And yes also to calling them inverted commas, one of the more ridiculous aspects of the new curriculum.

Ok thanks - have no idea what's in the curriculum tbh but it is good to know. I know she is doing fine at school so I wasn't worried about it. I took the report to be constructive - this is what she does well and this what she can work on. Just wanted to make sure she understood the grammar rules around the inverted commas and that I wasn't about to confuse her.

Oh there's nothing wrong with helping out and chatting about it as you have riding - I wasn't meaning to come across as criticising, I really wondered if it was something the teacher had actually suggested you work on at home.

None of DD's targets have ever been anything she doesn't understand, the targets have all been about making things fast and automatic as opposed to needing to learn something.
