Admission on Assessment

Our 4 year old is due to start reception in Sept next year. We have applied for him to attend a private school. He will have to sit an assessment prior to a place being offered. Can someone offer some light on what schools are assessing/looking for at this age please?x

Somewhere there is a 3+ - 7+ thread running (maybe in Education?). You could look at that.

  1. to check your child doesn't have any pesky special needs
  2. other things depending on how selective the school is

Dd had to listen to story and interact, puzzles, drawing, play with others. All observation rather than testing iyswim. It is about fitting in and seeming engaged.

How over-subscribed is the school?

Schools are generally looking for nice children who seem to be able to behave themselves. How selective they are in terms of skills varies, but generally the inquisitive, enthusiastic, interested DC does well. They doesn't mean they all have to be confident outgoing types - there's scope for all sorts of temperaments (any shyness is allowed for by competent assessors).

Do remember that they may also be assessing you...
