Asking on behalf of a friend

Friends ds is year 3 is still unable to read or write, can't spell simple words like To, Cat, at etc, can't write name but that's obviously through just habit but doesn't seem to understand phonics or sounds at all, so if you ask to spell dog doesn't seem to under stand it starts with a d and will say "g"

He also can't add simple number 1+2 etc

So far school just seen to say she isn't doing enough at home Hmm yet her younger child (year 1) is excelling

At this stage what should/could she ask the school to do, I think he needs to be assessed as there must be a reason for it

I’d agree he needs to be assessed. Not being able to read and spell CVC words by year 3 is much more than not doing enough at home unless the school are also doing nothing at school.

How did he do in the Year 1 Phonics check?
Can he aurally blend and segment words?
Does he recognise written symbols? Numbers and letters
Does he understand the value of numbers? Can he match numbers with quantities?

Not being able to read or write at year 3 is more than just not doing work with him at home. I would be asking the teacher what the plan was to help him catch up.

MissFlashpants · 20/11/2017 18:05

Wow, that's worrying. I have a child that age, and a P1, and the P1 is doing far more than that.

She should absolutely be pressing for more support.

Shocking! Also that they are blaming the friend. Interventions should have been put in place ages ago.

Definitely needs to push for an assessment.

NoSquirrels · 21/11/2017 21:43

It absolutely can't be right that school is unconcerned. I'd expect interventions out of his ears by now.

The school sound shit OP. Definitely not normal attainment. If I were her I’d try to move school & get assessed.
