More books to read

DD is 5 and in Y1. She reads anything in sight and is bored with the school reading books, which she finds very easy. At the end of reception the teacher told me I should be starting her on simple chapter books, but the Y1 teacher doesn't agree, and isn't happy about moving her up to higher bands. I don't want to be pushy, and I accept the teacher may have her reasons for keeping DD down though I wish she'd explain them to me!

Anyway, I thought if I got her interesting books to read at home she will hopefully keep enjoying reading even if not at school, so I'm looking for recommendations. I have quite a lot from my childhood; I'm looking for newer stuff that I might have missed. To give a general idea, DD reads (and comprehends - I do check!) the Worst Witch, Anna Hibiscus, Milly-Molly-Mandy, My Naughty Little Sister, Mr Pink-Whistle, and her latest one from the library is The Cat and the King by Nick Sharratt. What else is out there?

Possibly a bit easier but my dd likes Squishy mcfluff books.
I know what you mean though as dd is on much lower at school than she is capable of.

Take a look at the Reading Ladder books they provide a great transition to chapter books for younger readers. You can also get chapter versions of books your child may know from picture books she may like such as Winnie the Witch, The Princess and the Wizard (Julia Donaldson)

I’m reading 13 storey treehouse with my year 1 atm as we’ve hit a roadblock with school books. Mainly doing it to help him track with larger amount of texts but he handles it well.

Ah, I was just going to post the link that Tomorrow has just posted.

My son really likes the Project X Alien Adventures Books - it sounds as though the first ones will be too easy for your child but they go up to ORT 20 (my son isn’t on level 20, I should point out).

Project x has sets on Book People. The second set is harder and more ks2 but ks1 might be too easy.

OUP sell the books that come after set 2 - the guy there gave me a discount because I bought all the books from ORT 15 to 20 (but they were still far more expensive than The Book People).

Oh these are exactly what my DD (now 8) loved at that age!

Try the Sophie Stories - there are plenty of them, they’re wonderful and DD was definitely reading them at 4/5, along with the Mrs Pepperpot Stories, and The Penderwicks (there are 4 soon to be 5 of them). She also started her first Harry Potter at that age, though had to slow a bit at the 4th book.

Yes, it’s a pity that The Book People don’t sell a third series. I emailed them and they said they have no plans to.

Jill Tomlinson series is good - the owl who was afraid of the dark etc. They are well written and seem to flow nicely.

My dd also enjoyed the time chronicles ORT books. Biff and chip etc but lots of history and aimed at slightly older children sort of yr 2 ish. I think they start at book band 10 and go through to 12 +.
